Really to hold a founded opinion on this subject you would have to have had at least some experience of formal translation studies otherwise you would have no way of knowing what the experience can bring to your translations, and how much easier your professional life is as a result.

Your definition of "self-taught" is far too narrow, in this context. If one already has subject-specific knowledge, good knowledge of the source language and excellent writing skills in the target language, "books" or "methods" don't come into it.
And permit me to be a little sceptical about the value of classroom brainstorming by students who have an as-yet incomplete education in translation theory and/or practice, no professional experience of translation, and as-yet inadequate knowledge of any subject area, moderated in at least some cases by an academic with little or no professional experience of translation, inadequate knowledge of at least some subject areas, ...
This is not to belittle the value to you of your own education in translation and experience of translation studies. It is just to suggest that there are many paths to satisfactory style in different genres.
