Information about other search engines Jul 8, 2007

Clustering looks like a feature that will sometimes be very useful.
I've just found another site that can help in selecting search engines. As I've not used it yet I don't know how useful it is in practice, but it could be worth a visit, and click on the top two in the "Features" list on the left for lists of how you can specify what the search engine should look for.

Google search operators (cheat sheet) Jul 9, 2007

I find this website very helpful for Google searches:

http://www.googleguide.com/advanced_operators_reference.html

(in fact, I printed it out and keep in on my desk).

Useful but sometimes annoying Jul 9, 2007

For Finnish it is often useful feature to be able to search for different forms of one word. However, I think it would be better, if it was optional. There might be a check box for "use fuzzy search" or similar, and the default option would be "exact search".

Did you mean...? Jul 10, 2007

Hi

I absolutely understand what you mean!
It's now about a week that google does not ask "Did you mean...?" anymore.

When I was looking for abbreviations like "pph" last week, google gave me hundreds of hits containing all kind of possibilities like "php" "hhp" etc.

Before it was "Did you mean php?"

Have you not noticed?

I will try avoiding this with advanced search but I am not sure this will help...

Again! Jul 12, 2007

I was looking for "fulls" and "brewery" (working on a translation about brewery warehouses) and I get plenty of hits: "Brewery falls"!

Why does Google do not ask anymore?

Google handling... Jul 15, 2007

I guess, if I need to drive a vehicle, I should learn before how it should be done. The same is valid for Google.

Did you search the right way, telling Google it should search for exactly these words: +fulls+brewery . If you write only fulls brevery then you are on the wrong way.

And about the big number of results:

Did you search the right way, telling Google it should search for exactly these words: +fulls+brewery . If you write only fulls brevery then you are on the wrong way.

And about the big number of results:

Lets search the word survey:
http://www.google.es/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4SKPB_enES231&q=survey

Theoretically 267000 results in 0,07 s. Oh, my God! Did you really mean a searcher can do such big search in so little time: LOL! Google DOES NOT search over 1000 results.

Lets see something: At the bottom of the results page you will see something like this:

Google
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 20 Next

Click over number 2 . The results page will beginn at the 10th result:
http://www.google.es/search?q=survey&hl=es&rlz=1T4SKPB_enES231&start=10&sa=N

If you click over number 3, the result page will beginn at the 2Oth result and so far:
http://www.google.es/search?q=survey&hl=es&rlz=1T4SKPB_enES231&start=20&sa=N

So, if you want to go quickly to the 1000th result, you only need to change number 10 in the first URL I have written by 1000:
http://www.google.es/search?q=survey&hl=es&rlz=1T4SKPB_enES231&start=1000&sa=N

¿Did Google display any results?

IMHO Google is OK. Relevant results should be between the 50/100 first results of a search.

Have a nice week!
