Dear all,
I have just delivered a lengthy English translation to a customer which includes many German names with umlauts.
Although my customer can see the umlauts on the screen - the font is Times Roman - they do not print out.
I don't know off-hand what printer, operating system etc. my customer has, but can find out if necessary. Does anyone know what is amiss here?

Assuming we're talking MS Word, this might be a font/stylesheet problem. Have the client set the font to Times New Roman (and, if that doesn't help, to Arial).

I meant "Times New Roman", not "Times Roman".

Times is a font which is present in many printers, meaning that printing applications don't need to download the exact shape of the letters but just specify "print character x", "print character y". This has the advantage of speed and the occasional disadvantage that the font in the printer does not fully match the font in the application.
A workaround is to specify (if possible) that the printer should use the lettershapes sent by the application rather than the font in its own mem... Just a vague idea; it might help to know what printer we're talking about.
Changing the font for test purposes as Klaus suggests (to Arial or even to a more esoteric font to ensure it's not present in the printer's memory, e.g. Palatino, Verdana, Georgia) could yield further insights.

Your client almost certainly has his printer driver configured to use the printer's default fonts, and the default font does not contain the umlauted characters. For my HP laser printer (Windows XP OS), the setting is found under Printers & Faxes (right click on device icon)/Printing Preferences/Layout/Advanced/Graphic/TrueType font: 'Use device font' OR 'Download soft font'.
The exact path and options will depend on the individual printer and driver.
