Hi everybody,
I'd like to know if some of you use .pac or .890 files (for subtitles). And if so, could you tell me about it and especially about the software you use to convert your files?
Thanks,
Gwenolé.

Pac files were once 'proprietary' to Screen Systems' Win2020 subtitling software, but have since become one of few de facto 'interchange' file formats, allowing otherwise incompatible subtitling softwares to import translations from other systems (there are no I.P. implications with reverse engineering certain file formats so most 'off the shelf' and proprietary softwares can export pac files). A translation created in one system, therefore - ultimately, done by one company - needing to be repurposed by another company using a different system would be done via the pac format. Often, two companies servicing the same client where a translation has to be 'moved' from one company to the other, and both companies use the same software, would still use a pac interchange format would out of professional integrity. The EBU .stl file format is a similar format but does not 'belong' to any subtitling system, as such, being rather an initiative of the European Broadcasting Union. You should note that the ability of a 'receiving' software being able to 'import' a pac or stl created in another system is dependent on each software's 'ability' to create and receive said file formats - the accuracy of this is open to interpretation by the software developers.

890 is the file format of the Cavena subtitling system, and the above pac and stl variables are more or less applicable here also.
