I am considering presenting a bid for the translation of an e-commerce website, and need some technical advice. The potential client has written they would provide the content to be translated in structured XML format, which I have never handled before. I could use a reality check as to whether I am qualified to handle this project, from the technical standpoint.
Is the process of working from an XML doc easily learned, and if so could you point me in the direction of the relevant instructions? Is this a process one needs some time to get acquainted with, or is it just a matter of having the right information? Are there any major PC requirements/incompatibilities? Would I be able to use Wordfast with this format?
If I have to ask, would it be wiser to stay away from this project?
My apologies if this question has been asked before, and thanks in advance for any feedback.
Cheers,

Trados tag editor takes some of the agony out of working with XML files. You'll need the DTD or related *.ini files so that Trados (or DV) will be able to recognize the tags.
There are, of course, other ways of handling xml files, but I've found that TagEditor works best for me.

Sorry, I missed the reference to Wordfast in your query. Wordfast "Tools" allows you to work with xml files.

Could you please elaborate?
I am getting the distinct feeling I would be out of my depth with this one
Any further technical handholding will be much appreciated.
Cheers,

If you look at a "raw" xml file, you'll see
something that looks like this:
Crickets, if properly prepared, are quite tasty
You want a translating tool that will highlight the text to be translated (Crickets ...) and protect the xml tags , because if you screw up a tag, it's possible the parser will think the file is corrupted.

I've not used Wordfast for this purpose (I've only used the program a few times, just as part of a presentation on various TM programs), but according to the documentation, the +Tools utility allows you to work on xml tagged files.
If you would care to contact me directly

I can send you a small xml file with a related *ini file so you can see what it would look like in Wordfast.
Kevin ▲ Collapse | | | my experience with xml files and wordfast | Apr 10, 2004 |
My experience shows that plus tools in wordfast do tag .xml files and convert them into .doc. I translate .docs, but when it comes to un-tagging translated files into .xml files, the tool does it incorrectly and the result is with tags different from the original.
So, I use an html editor, where tags have different colours and thus are distinctly seen (translatable text is black).
I'm going to test my recent purchase - DejaVu. It is said to process .xml projects. | | | Susana Galilea United States Local time: 11:04 English to Spanish + ... TOPIC STARTER yes, I do care :) | Apr 10, 2004 |

I posted a query on the Wordfast group about this: ..."> So, short of more precise details than "the result is with tags

example because this person

I am presenting this quotation only to show that Wordfast and Plus tools might be a solution for translating XML-files. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » XML newbie Anycount & Translation Office 3000 | Translation Office 3000
