Miro a Ann. Sé que finge dormir. Me abraza de lado y siento su pecho blando y la cara interior de su muslo. La portera discute con el primer repartidor del día, hoy especialmente beligerante. Acaricio la parte de Ann que sobresale a las sábanas y vuelvo a tener la sensación de que la nuestra es una felicidad insostenible, algo que nunca debería haber sucedido pero que solo un imbécil rehusaría vivir. Nos llevamos dieciséis años, y en dieciséis años ocurren demasiadas cosas. No solo es una cuestión cuantitativa, es un miedo o un exceso de sentido común que termina por degradarlo todo, por restarle intensidad. Translation - English There’s something immoral, almost criminal, about us lying here, embracing each other, listening to the stillness of the dawn, the coffee pot gurgling, the high heels of the neighbor upstairs, the meowing litter of kittens that have been living in the cellar for the past few days. I look over at Ann. I know she’s pretending to sleep. She cuddles me on her side and I can feel her soft breasts and the inside of her thigh. The door attendant, especially belligerent today, is arguing with the first deliveryman of the day. I caress the skin peeking out from under the sheets and have that feeling again that our happiness is unsustainable, something that never should have happened, but that only an idiot would pass up. She’s sixteen years younger, and too many things happen in sixteen years. It’s not just a quantitative issue, it’s a fear or an excess of common sense that finally ends up corroding everything, diminishing the intensity. The slatted shadows of the blinds project across Ann’s skin, covering it in tiny ants of light marching along the curve of her thigh, up her arm to her armpit.
