For over ten years, members of this community have come together to create such tools as KudoZ, the Blue Board, powwows, the articles knowledge base, the ProZ.com exchange, translation contests, quick polls, invoicing, the Certified PRO Network, conferences (in-person and virtual), in-person and online training, and much, much more... these shared tools have, in turn, benefited each member. This collaborative effort continues to permanently change the translator's profession from a solitary pursuit into something more interactive, more efficient, more rewarding and more profitable. In the recent mid-year report to members, some of the accomplishments for this first half of 2010 were mentioned. Among them were:

The ProZ.com Certified PRO program is a new initiative of the ProZ.com community, the purpose of which is to identify qualified translators and translation companies working in various language pairs, and provide them with the option of networking and collaborating in an environment consisting entirely of screened professionals. Those accepted into the program earn the "ProZ.com Certified PRO" title and seal, which may optionally be displayed in profile pages and elsewhere on or off the ProZ.com website.
What are the requirements for getting certified?

The 3 parts explained
01 Translation ability
A screening process has been developed in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the EN 15038 standard for quality in translation. For translators, various means are used to confirm the "competences" called for in EN 15038, including verification of credentials that applicants have earned from associations around the world, such as the American Translator Association (USA), the Chartered Institute of Linguists (UK). (Sample translation, peer/client review and other data may be considered in the review process, especially in language pairs and areas in which tested credentials may not be as readily accessible.)
02 Business reliability
The second requirement for admittance into the program is business reliability. This is assessed through a combination of peer review, client review and consideration of relevant data from the ProZ.com database. In the case of companies, track record both as a supplier and as a buyer may be considered. Once admitted to the program, participants must maintain good track records in order to remain in the program.
03 Good citizenship
The third requirement for admittance into the program is "good citizenship". Participants must endorse and act in a manner consistent with the ProZ.com professional guidelines, they must accept the terms and conditions of program participation, and they must contribute to the upkeep of the program by remaining in good standing as members, in terms of membership fees, profile data, and adherence with site and program rules and regulations.

El programa Certified PRO de ProZ.com es una nueva iniciativa de la comunidad de ProZ.com, cuyo propósito es identificar a traductores y agencias de traducción calificados que trabajan en diversos pares de idiomas y brindarles la opción de establecer conexiones de trabajo y colaborar en un ambiente conformado exclusivamente por profesionales seleccionados. Aquellos que son aceptados en el programa obtienen el título y el sello de Certified PRO de ProZ.com, que podrá exhibirse de manera opcional en las páginas de los perfiles y en otras partes del sitio ProZ.com o fuera de él.

Traductores autónomos:
1. Capacidad para traducir*

Explicación de las 3 áreas
01 Capacidad para traducir:
Se desarrolló un proceso de selección según las pautas establecidas en la norma de calidad en traducción EN 15038. Para los traductores, se utilizan distintos medios para confirmar las "competencias" exigidas en la EN 15038, que comprenden la verificación de las credenciales que los solicitantes han obtenido de parte de asociaciones en todo el mundo como: la American Translator Association (EE. UU.), el Chartered Institute of Linguists (Reino Unido). (En el proceso de selección pueden también considerarse muestras de traducciones, opiniones de pares o clientes y otro tipo de información, en especial, en los pares de idiomas y áreas en donde no se dispone de fácil acceso a credenciales verificadas).
02 Confiabilidad para los negocios:
El segundo requisito para ser admitido en el programa es la confiabilidad para los negocios. Este aspecto se evalúa mediante la combinación de opiniones de colegas y clientes, y el análisis de la información pertinente en la base de datos de ProZ.com. En el caso de las agencias, puede considerarse tanto el historial de provisión como el de compra. Una vez admitidos en el programa, los participantes deben mantener un buen historial para poder permanecer en él.
03 Condición de buen ciudadano:
El tercer requisito para ser admitido en el programa es la "condición de buen ciudadano". Los participantes deben adherir a las pautas profesionales de ProZ.com y actuar conforme a éstas, deben aceptar los términos y condiciones para la participación en el programa, y deben contribuir con éste conservando su condición de miembro (mediante el pago de la membresía), manteniendo la información en el perfil y observando el cumplimiento de las reglas y disposiciones del sitio y del programa.

2. What screening process is used to determine whether or not a translator qualifies for admittance into the program?

3. I am certified as a translator by a major industry association. Does that qualify me for admission into the Certified PRO network?
In part. A verified industry credential may fully satisfy the "translation ability" portion of the screening process. (Reliability and "good citizenship" must be established separately.)

In 2011, I started Translator Fun -- a blog for translators and language professionals with funny and light-hearted sketches intended to reflect on translators' jargon, working environment, and translation challenges of overcoming language barriers.
