Translation - English Background and humanitarian situation in Kenya
The country was wracked with electoral violence in January 2008, and is destabilized by the crisis in neighboring Somalia (the refugee camp, mostly Somali, Dadaab, saw its population grow from 170,000 to 283,000 people in November 2009). At year’s end in 2008, when the government declared a state of emergency regarding food security, 2009 has seen the drought hitting the northern region. Rainy season precipitation is being estimated at 20% of normal levels. Only one quarter of the harvest usually produced was harvested, and more than 100,000 cattle have died. The rate of global acute malnutrition (GAM) has reached 15% to 25% in the affected areas. Finally, cholera continues to hit the west (Kisumu) and north-east (Moyale, Mandera).
