Intro.
Ben Okri (Minna, Nigeria, 1959), has survived Biafra´s war, an exile
with huge poverty in London and, as a writer, won the Booker prize
when he was 32 with “ Famished road”, the first part of a trilogy
that tells the story of a spirit child, an abiku, who rejects to die and
moves, like the narrator, between two worlds.
Sharing a same country with Nobel Wole Soyika, Okri is together
with south-africans J.M. Coetzee and Nadine Gordimer, the only
African who has reached the most important prize of English writing.
After nearly five years of silence, a really long time for such an
extraordinary and prolific narrator, who did published for the first
time at 21 years old, Okri has come back with “the star´s magician”
(edit. the other coast). Warm, funny and with an insatiable curiosity,
Okri mixes, like happens in this book of about 500 pages, the
tragedy and the miracle of Africa in his bibliography and in his
words.

each other. On these grounds, literature has a very important role”.
“In Europe there is a big worry for immigration. But, at the end of

African writers and language.
El Quijote de la mancha´s narrative has been compared with Gabriel
García Marquez magic realism and Okri´s “ the star´s magician”, is
a long African tale telling the love story in a world that is broken
due to a white wind that destroys everything around, taking away
human beings to the other sea side to turn them into slaves. Africa
´s landscape and legends have a crutial place reflected in a prose
which is full of hues and surprises; so the narrator (made-man-
surprise), flows between tragedy and life itself.
Interview.
Q. ¿So what about the emigration Africa suffers, and to avoid tha
thousands of people die every year in the sea?
A. The cause is the big economic inequaility: this is so devastating that people are
determined to risk their lives in order to improve their standard of living.
We don´t have to see immigration nor as a problem of the developed world neither of the underdeveloped; on the contrary it´s a global issue. We do have to start thinking the way our politics make people poorer, because if so, they´re going to come here. If we don´t improve the standards of living in all the planet, the tragedy will continue. Everything is connected and we have to change the form we see one each other; and this field is the ground where literature has an important role… Behind a lot of negative stories, there are good things; there are human beings.
Q. Do you think that the described situation in a film called “men´s children”, where immigrants are imprisoned in concentration camps can be real in a close future?
A. I don´t think it can worsen more because another of the aspects of 11-S or the 7-J, has been an awakening for what freedom stands for, an issue that is constantly on debates on TV. Tolerance is a discussed topic as well as freedom of speech. And that´s something I had never seen in my life. Ours is a time which Albert Camus would have so many things to say.
In fact, we need a new Camus to pose these crutial questions, such as whether freedom of creation or expression need a new definition. Freedom of creation has turned into something of great impor-tance, unimaginable. All that because of the times we are pushed to.
Q. Do you feel connected to other authors coming from the ancient empire´s countries, who write in English, and that have contributed a lot to change Language?
A. Yes and no, because some have moved within tradition, but others have looked for other ways because they consider that the novel´s tradition, as we know it isn´t enough to tell some stories. It´s not like with Dickens. One can´t write about Africa like Jane Austen does. It is something very different that implies a big challenge. We have brought a new story to Great Britain, for sure, but also a new way to see things that can seem quite strange from the beginning because it´s very different from the narrative experience, but also from the vital. One can´t talk about Africa from an european point of view. Right now I am two persons: an african and a european. I feel we are a new literary synthesis, that we try to widen the frontiers of what literature is meant to be.
Q. I guess you´ve been told there are many connections between your literature an …………..Garcia Marquez´s magic realism, who claimed he reflected reality the way he saw it.
R. Every description of people doesn´t reflect people´s reality, except the perception. That´s because there is a great difference between both. Notice Don Quijote´s example: What´s real in Don Quijote? You realize the Spanish landscapes, but from Don Quijote´s point of view they become people. ¿What is real? The place without a conscience or the conscience that transforms reality? África is the conscience transforming a place. That´s why Jane Austeen can´t be used to describe it. I can get in a jungle with Graham Greene and he will see trees, vines, animals, and I will see trees, vines, animals, but ancestor´s presences, the field´s spirits… because these are things that are in my perception. These will seem descriptions of two different places. A landscape changes because the people who inhabits it. That´s why the hardest work for a writer I to find the suited form, the relation of people with a place. When people compares Marquez´s perception with mine is due to the fact that our perception is similar and different from the west. Magic realism is a place that is transformed by conscience. Don Quijote is magic realism. Indeed it´s a kind of Genesis. It´s the conscience that builds the landscape for the first time.

Compartiendo un mismo país con Nobel Wole Soyika, Okri está junto
con los sudafricanos J.M. Coetzee y Nadine Gordimer, la única africana
que ha alcanzado el premio más Importante de la escritura inglesa.
Después de casi cinco años de silencio (mucho tiempo para una obra tan
extraordinaria y prolífica) Ben, que publicó por primera vez a los 21
años, ha vuelto con “el mago de las estrellas” (edit. la otra costa).

La narrativa de El Quijote de la mancha ha sido comparada con la el

de Okri, es un largo cuento africano que cuenta la historia de amor en
un mundo que roto debido a un viento blanco que destruye todo a su
alrededor, llevándose a los seres humanos al otro lado del mar. Todo,
para convertirlos en esclavos. El paisaje y las leyendas de África tienen
un papel crucial, lugar reflejado en una prosa llena de matices y
sorpresas; por lo que el narrador (hecho-hombre-sorpresa), fluye entre
la tragedia y la vida misma.
Entrevista.
P. ¿Y qué hay de la emigración que sufre África para evitar que miles de personas mueran cada año en el mar?
R. La causa es la gran desigualdad económica: esto es tan devastador que la gente está deci-dida a arriesgar su vida para mejorar su nivel de vida.
No hay que ver la inmigración ni como un problema del mundo desarrollado ni del subde-sarrollado; por el contrario, es un problema global. Tenemos que empezar a pensar en la forma en que nuestra política empobrece a la gente, porque si es así, van a venir aquí. Si no mejoramos los niveles de vida en todo el planeta, la tragedia continuará. Todo está conectado y tenemos que cambiar la forma en que nos vemos; este campo es el terreno donde la literatura tiene un papel importante… Detrás de muchas historias negativas, hay cosas buenas; hay seres humanos.
P. ¿Cree que la situación descrita en una película llamada “hijos de los hombres”, donde los inmigrantes son encarcelados en campos de concentración puede ser real en un futuro próximo?
R. No creo que pueda empeorar más porque otra de las vertientes del 11-S o del 7-J, ha sido un despertar de lo que es la libertad, un tema que está en constante debate en TV. La tolerancia es un tema discutido, así como la libertad de expresión. Y eso es algo que nunca había visto en mi vida. Ésta es una época en la que Albert Camus tendría tantas cosas que decir!
De hecho, necesitamos un nuevo Camus para plantear estas preguntas cruciales, como si la libertad de creación o de expresión necesita una nueva definición. La libertad de creación se ha convertido en algo de gran importancia, inimaginable. Todo eso por los tiempos que nos empujan.
P. ¿Te sientes conectado con otros autores provenientes de los países del antiguo imperio, que escriben en inglés y que han contribuido mucho a cambiar el idioma?
R. Sí y no, porque algunos se han movido dentro de la tradición, pero otros han buscado otros caminos porque consideran que la tradición de la novela, como sabemos, no es suficiente para contar algunas historias. No es como con Dickens. No se puede escribir sobre África como lo hace Jane Austen. Es algo muy diferente que implica un gran desafío. Hemos traído una nueva historia a Gran Bretaña, seguro, pero también una nueva forma de ver las cosas que pueden parecer bastante extrañas desde el principio porque es muy diferente de la experiencia narrativa, pero también de la vital. No se puede hablar de África desde un punto de vista europeo. Ahora mismo soy dos personas: una africana y una europea. Siento que somos una nueva síntesis literaria, que tratamos de ampliar las fronteras de lo que debe ser la literatura.
P. Supongo que le han dicho que hay muchas conexiones entre su literatura y el realismo mágico de García Márquez, quien afirmaba que reflejaba la realidad tal como él la veía.
R. Toda descripción de personas no refleja la realidad de las personas, excepto la percepción. Eso es porque hay una gran diferencia entre ambos. Fíjate en el ejemplo de Don Quijote: ¿Qué hay de real en Don Quijote? Te das cuenta de los paisajes españoles, pero desde el punto de vista de Don Quijote se convierten en personas. ¿Qué es real? ¿El lugar sin conciencia o la conciencia que transforma la realidad? África es la conciencia transformando un lugar. Por eso no se puede usar a Jane Austen para describirlo. Puedo meterme en una jungla con Graham Greene y él verá árboles, enredaderas, animales, y yo veré árboles, enredaderas, animales, pero presencias de ancestros, espíritus del campo… porque son cosas que están en mi percepción. . Estas parecerán descripciones de dos lugares diferentes. Un paisaje cambia porque las personas que lo habitan. Por eso el trabajo más duro para un escritor es encontrar la forma adecuada, la relación de las personas con un lugar. Cuando la gente compara la percepción de Márquez con la mía es porque nuestra percepción es similar y diferente a la occidental. El realismo mágico es un lugar que es transformado por la conciencia. Don Quijote es realismo mágico. De hecho, es una especie de Génesis. Es la conciencia la que construye el paisaje por primera vez.

Taking into account my degree in studies of English (and Germanic) Philology, this is an answer
for my credential as a translator English-Spanish/ Spanish-English (or Catalan-English/ English-
Catalan). I have been teacher of English from 2005 until today (17 years). It can "measure"
my language knowledge.
I learned English Philology (Humanities degrees) in Barcelona University, from
2000 to 2005.
I learned spanish from my father (on behalf of my mother, I learned english too) so one of
my languages since born has been English. Hence, I got (and trained too) a sharper ability
to translate, with it I had the close-bilingual Spanish- since child.
Of course I have the domain in Spanish also very, very close to Catalan (the country I live, where
the F.C. Barcelona!!) in Spain.
It is important to remark that I have been translating (2 essays and a whole book) in a 4 year
period, teaching English at high schools from ages of 14 to 20 (including tuition class for adults if
3 private language schools). That has taken place for 17 years.
