Hello!

My name is Alex and I am a translator from German and Spanish into English. I have always had a passion for learning languages and studied BA Applied Languages (German and Spanish) at the University of Portsmouth. Here, I focused on the use of languages in working life, studying translation and the theory behind language learning. I am also qualified to teach English as a foreign language after completing the Trinity Cert TESOL course. On my year abroad, I studied general translation at the European University of Madrid, Spain, and technical translation at the Fachhochschule Flensburg, Germany.

After completing my degree, I used my languages in a multilingual call centre for Norwegian Cruise Line, where I built rapport with customers and helped them navigate the cruise industry to book a cruise of their dreams.

I returned to education to complete a MSc in Translation Studies at the University of Edinburgh, where I earnt a first-class degree. I studied how to use translation technology in the workplace (where I learnt to use Trados), audio-visual translation and translation theory as well as completing my dissertation.

From here, I went straight into the translation industry, working as an in-house linguist for Global Voices, Stirling. I have gained experience in translating a wide variety of texts: marketing for a car brand, medical texts, legal contracts, magazines and well as financial and technical texts. I was also tasked with training new starters on Trados, on translation styles for particular clients and proofreading their translations.

I am currently completing a proofreading course from the Publishing Training Centre.

I have recently decided to make the transition into freelance translation.
