Source text - English Regarding Ira Aldridge’s time in Paris. There are several accounts of Ira Aldridge winning rave reviews for his performances at the Odéon Theater. However, these historians seem to have gotten this wrong. The misunderstanding likely stems from a chance encounter Aldridge had at the Universal Exhibition, known today as The World’s Fair. In a diary entry at the end of April 1867, Aldridge wrote that the event had been resplendent with over 42,000 exhibitors and visitors that included two emperors and some 80 royal personages. While there, Aldridge met the Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote of the exchange in his autobiography saying that Ira “was just now playing to Parisians at the Odeon, where he took the role of Othello.” However, such a performance was never documented in Paris papers. While Aldridge had been well received in performances at Boulogne-sir-Mer and Roubaix and Lille near the Belgian border and at Versailles, subsequent engagements in Paris theaters remained elusive. While preparing to return to Paris in the hope of finally taking the stage there, Aldidge grew increasingly weak during rehearsals for a performance in St. Petersburg, Russia. He died there on August 7, 1867.
Translation - French Concernant le séjour d'Ira Aldridge à Paris.
