Abstract.
Neonatal hypocalcemia is the most prevalent type of hypocalcemia encountered by the pediatrician. A fall of total calcium below 7.5 mg/dL, or 4.4 mg/dL (or 1.1 mmol/L) in the ionized calcium concentration usually defines neonatal hypocalcemia.
Methods:
Eighty neonates with or without clinical manifestations of hypocalcemia were included in this study. Clinical data were analyzed in terms of gender, gestational age (GA), type of delivery, birth weight, perinatal history, signs and symptoms at diagnosis of hypocalcemia and Apgar score at first minute.
Calcium is measured as total calcium, comprising protein bound and the ionized form. Ionized calcium, the form that causes physiologic effects, comprises about 50% of the total serum calcium. Of the remainder, 40% circulates bound to albumin and globulin, and about 8% to 10%, bound to citrate, lactate, bicarbonate, sulfate, and phosphate.
Serum calcium is regulated within close limits by several hormones that balance gastrointestinal intake with urinary or fecal loss; the skeleton serves as a store of calcium, so that calcium may be mobilized when needed or stored if necessary.
In disorders of calcium metabolism, excessive calcium may be removed from the bone, or deficiency in various factors may impair bone formation, leading to bone diseases.
Hypocalcemia may be defined as a serum Ca below as 7.5 mg/dL and ionized Ca below 4.4 mg/dL (or 1.1 mmol/L) if birthweight is over 1,500 g and below 7 mg/dL and ionized Ca below 3.6 mg/dL (0.9 mmol/L) if birthweight is under 1,500 g.
Symptoms of hypocalcemia are more nonspecific in newborns than in older children; poor feeding, emesis, and apnea may be the only signs. More specific signs of hypocalcemia that might be found in older infants include tachycardia, irritability, jitteriness, tetany, laryngospasm, and seizures.

En este estudio se incluyeron ochenta neonatos con o sin manifestaciones clínicas de hipocalcemia. Los datos clínicos se analizaron en función del género, la edad gestacional (EG), el tipo de parto, el peso al nacer, la historia perinatal, los signos y síntomas en el momento del diagnóstico de hipocalcemia y la puntuación Apgar al minuto de nacer.
El calcio se mide como calcio total, que incluye el calcio unido a proteínas y la forma ionizada. El calcio ionizado, la forma que causa efectos fisiológicos, comprende alrededor del 50% del calcio sérico total. Del resto, el 40% circula unido a albúmina y globulina y cerca del 8% al 10% unido a citrato, lactato, bicarbonato, sulfato y fosfato.

Indications:
Penicillin injectable is indicated for treatment of bacterial pneumonia (shipping fever) caused by pasteurella multocida in cattle and sheep, erysipelas caused by erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae en swine, and strangles caused by streptococcus equi in horses.
Description:
Each mL contains 300.000 units penicillin G potassium, 139.0 mg procaine hydrochloride, 2.0 % procaine hydrochloride, 3.0 mg potassium phosphate monobasic, 6.0 mg potassium phosphate dibasic, 0.4 % sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate, 0.4 mg polysorbate 80, 2.0 mg lecithin, 0.1 % methylparaben, 0.01 % propylparaben, 0.15 % sodium carboxymethylcellulose and q.s. water for injection. Penicillin G potassium and procaine hydrochloride react to form penicillin G procaine.
Dosage:
Penicillin Injectable should be administered by intramuscular route. The product is ready for injection after warming the vial to room temperature and shaking to ensure uniform suspension. The recommended daily dosage of penicillin is 3.000 units per pound of bodyweight (one mL per 100 lbs bodyweight).
Continue daily treatment until improvement is apparent and for at least one day after symptoms disappear, usually in two to three days.
Treatment should not exceed four consecutive days. No more than 10 mL should be injected at any one site in adult livestock: rotate injection sites for each succeeding treatment.
Residue warnings:
Exceeding the daily dosage of 3.000 units per pound of bodyweight, administering for more than four consecutive days or exceeding the maximum injection site volume may result in antibiotic residues beyond the withdrawal time. Milk taken from treated dairy animals within 48 hours after the last treatment must not be used for food. Discontinue use of this drug for the following time period before treated animals are slaughtered for food:
Cattle – 14 days, sheep – 9 days, swine – 7 days.
A withdrawal period has not been established for this product in pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal.
Warning:
Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. Not for use in humans.

El medicamento Penicillin Injectable se indica para el tratamiento de la pneumonía bacteriana (fiebre del embarque), causada por pasteurella multocida en el ganado bovino y en el ovino; para la erisipela, causada por erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae en cerdos y para la moquillo equino, causado por el streptococcus equi en los caballos.

I am a Bachelor in English and French languages from Central University of Las Villas (Universidad Central "Marta Abreu de Las Villas) in Cuba.
I graduated in 2004 with a Golden Degree. The final exercise of my university course was a state exam in translation and bilateral consecutive interpreting.
After my graduation I worked for two years at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences(Instituto Superior de Ciencias Médicas) in Santa Clara city where I taught English to medicine students.
Subsequently, I was a professor for about 6 years at another university, Sede Universitaria Municipal(Municipal University Filial) in another town, Fomento, where I taught different subjects like Latinoamerican Literature, General Literature, Writing and Style, Spanish Grammar and Cuban Culture.
During the same periodI was a part-time professor of French at the Municipal Pedagogical Filial(Sede Pedagógica Municipal) and of Basic and Medical English at the Municipal Medical Sciences Filial (Sede Municipal de Ciencias Médicas).
In 2004 I obtained a diploma in German Language from "Miguel de Cervantes" Language School in Santa Clara, Cuba.
