Source text - English Charles Goodyear had been a prosperous merchant in Philadelphia before the panic of 1834 drove him into bankruptcy. Remembering that he had once devised a valve for a life preserver, he located it in his attic and took it to the New York office of the Roxbury (Mass.) Rubber Company. There he was told that the device was a good one but that the rubber itself was proving to be worthless.
