Portuguese to English: ANÁLISE DA RELAÇÃO ENTRE ESTRUTURA E DESIGN DE DUAS PONTES DE ROBERT MAILLART UTILIZANDO O SOFTWARE ANSYS General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Construction / Civil Engineering
Source text - Portuguese Resumo.
Translation - English Abstract. The design of large-scale projects such as bridges, viaducts, stadiums, towers, and aqueducts requires special attention from the designer due to the impact that they can generate in their surroundings. When well designed, these constructions can transcend their original functional purpose and reach dimensions in the subjectivity field, interfering in the beauty, harmony and self-esteem of a city. Throughout the history of humanity, we have numerous examples of buildings of this nature that have become emblems of cities, rulers or historical periods. The Industrial Revolution, in addition to promoting the known changes in society, also definitively dismembered the engineer and the architect's professional performance. It can be noticed that, in the present day, is very frequent project designs in which the dialogue between architecture and structure is deficient, generating problems of different natures. The concept of Structural Art, developed by Ph.D. David Billington of Princeton University, USA, will be addressed in this work. Billington defends that constructions of this nature must unite structural efficiency, pleasant aesthetic and the consequent economy of resources. The Swiss engineer Robert Maillart developed, throughout his career, the ability to conciliate the structural premises and design requisites to confer formidable aesthetic value and structural efficiency to the bridges that he projected. He is, therefore, an excellent example of a structural artist. In this work, the computational analysis of the simplified structure of two Robert Maillart’s bridges will be made, using the Ansys Software that uses as analysis method the MEF - Finite Elements Method. In the Zuoz bridge (1901), pathologies in the concrete arch wall had been verified, which portion was instinctively removed in the Tavanasa bridge (1905). The aim is to simulate the two models, analyzing the interactions between the structure and the aesthetic design, and to evaluate the efficiency proposed by Maillart to the Tavanasa model.
