Bio

I studied English at the Far Eastern State University (present-day Far Eastern Federal University) for 5 years and received a Master's Degree in English Translation upon graduation.

I developed English-speaking abilities and gained invaluable interpreting experience when I was enrolled in the Day Courses of Tour Guides at the Intourist in Saint-Petersburg - the main authority during the time of the USSR for receiving foreign guests and tourists. In addition to my courses, I worked as a tour guide.

Working at the Scientific-Industrial Amalgamation "Electron" in Saint-Petersburg helped me gain insight into electronic optical tubes’ design and production. Working alongside the developers and designers, I translated papers related to this field into Russian. It was there that I first learned about the "signal/noise ratio";)

Later, working in Customs at the International Pulkovo Airport in Saint-Petersburg as an Interpreter and Inspector I further developed my communication skills while gaining interrogative experience.

For 7 years I worked as a Senior translator at the Institute of Volcanology & Seismology, Far East Division, Russian Academy of Sciences, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. During that period I translated over 70 scientific papers from Russian into English that were published in the International Scientific magazines "Volcanology and Seismology", "Tectonophysics", "Seismic Research", "Journal of Geophysical Research", "Hydrogeology", and more. At that time, I participated in International field expeditions, interpreting scientific talks, conferences, seminars, presentations and slide shows for our colleagues from the US Geological Survey, JPL (NASA), Pasadena, CA, Alaskan Volcano Observatory, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, etc.

At present I continue my collaboration with the Institute, occasionally translating articles into English in the areas of Active Volcanism, Volcanic tremor, Seismicity, Prediction of Earthquakes and Plate Tectonics.

My principle for translations into English (as it is NOT my native language) is to translate an article in such a way so that every detail is understood by the English-speaking reviewer or editor.

I have collaborated with the administration of the Mutnovsky Geothermal Power Plant (hitaveita - Icelandic word) from the initial stages of drilling steam boreholes and getting approval for reserves of geothermal energy in the 1990s and continuing to the present-day production of electricity and heat, relaying them to the populated areas of the Kamchatka Peninsula. I assisted specialists of the Icelandic National Energy Authority and Virkir Orkint LLC to perform the initial assessment of the hydrothermal resources.

One of the unforgettable experiences of my interpreter's career was a 2.5 months marathon and travel over Kamchatka, Kuriles and Commander Islands with a senior writer of the National Geographic Magazine, Mr. Brian Hodgeson who published a series of articles on the Russian Far East. It is after him that I learned that "Politics is the art of the possible". I also memorized his prayer:

"Please, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage - to change the things I can change,

And the wisdom - to know the difference."

From 2003 I work as a full-time Freelance Translator, receiving assignments via the Internet and from domestic market clients.
