The wolf is carnivore incarnate and he’s as cunning as he is ferocious; once he’s had a taste of flesh then nothing else will do.
At night, the eyes of wolves shine like candle flames, yellowish, reddish, but that is because the pupils of their eyes fatten on darkness and catch the light from your lantern to flash it back to you – red for danger; if a wolf’s eyes reflect only moonlight, then they gleam a cold and unnatural green, a mineral, a piercing colour. If the benighted traveller spies those luminous, terrible sequins stitched suddenly on the black thickets, then he knows he must run, if fear has not struck him stock-still.
But those eyes are all you will be able to glimpse of the forest assassins as they cluster invisibly round your smell of meat as you go through the wood unwisely late. They will be like shadows, they will be like wraiths, grey members of a congregation of nightmare; hark! his long, wavering howl … an aria of fear made audible.
The wolfsong is the sound of the rending you will suffer, in itself a murdering.
It is winter and cold weather. In this region of mountain and forest, there is now nothing for the wolves to eat. Goats and sheep are locked up in the byre, the deer departed for the remaining pasturage on the southern slopes – wolves grow lean and famished. There is so little flesh on them that you could count the starveling ribs through their pelts, if they gave you time before they pounced. Those slavering jaws; the lolling tongue; the rime of saliva on the grizzled chops – of all the teeming perils of the night and the forest, ghosts, hobgoblins, ogres that grill babies upon gridirons, witches that fatten their captives in cages for cannibal tables, the wolf is worst for he cannot listen to reason.
You are always in danger in the forest, where no people are. Step between the portals of the great pines where the shaggy branches tangle about you, trapping the unwary traveller in nets as if the vegetation itself were in a plot with the wolves who live there, as though the wicked trees go fishing on behalf of their friends – step between the gateposts of the forest with the greatest trepidation and infinite precautions, for if you stray from the path for one instant, the wolves will eat you. They are grey as famine, they are as unkind as plague.
The grave-eyed children of the sparse villages always carry knives with them when they go out to tend the little flocks of goats that provide the homesteads with acrid milk and rank, maggoty cheeses. Their knives are half as big as they are, the blades are sharpened daily.
But the wolves have ways of arriving at your own hearthside. We try and try but sometimes we cannot keep them out. There is no winter’s night the cottager does not fear to see a lean, grey, famished snout questing under the door, and there was a woman once bitten in her own kitchen as she was straining the macaroni.
Fear and flee the wolf; for, worst of all, the wolf may be more than he seems.
There was a hunter once, near here, that trapped a wolf in a pit. This wolf had massacred the sheep and goats; eaten up a mad old man who used to live by himself in a hut halfway up the mountain and sing to Jesus all day; pounced on a girl looking after the sheep, but she made such a commotion that men came with rifles and scared him away and tried to track him into the forest but he was cunning and easily gave them the slip. So this hunter dug a pit and put a duck in it, for bait, all alive-oh; and he covered the pit with straw smeared with wolf dung. Quack, quack! went the duck and a wolf came slinking out of the forest, a big one, a heavy one, he weighed as much as a grown man and the straw gave way beneath him – into the pit he tumbled. The hunter jumped down after him, slit his throat, cut off all his paws for a trophy.
And then no wolf at all lay in front of the hunter but the bloody trunk of a man, headless, footless, dying, dead.
A witch from up the valley once turned an entire wedding party into wolves because the groom had settled on another girl. She used to order them to visit her, at night, from spite, and they would sit and howl around her cottage for her, serenading her with their misery.
Not so very long ago, a young woman in our village married a man who vanished clean away on her wedding night. The bed was made with new sheets and the bride lay down in it; the groom said, he was going out to relieve himself, insisted on it, for the sake of decency, and she drew the coverlet up to her chin and she lay there. And she waited and she waited and then she waited again – surely he’s been gone a long time? Until she jumps up in bed and shrieks to hear a howling, coming on the wind from the forest.
That long-drawn, wavering howl has, for all its fearful resonance, some inherent sadness in it, as if the beasts would love to be less beastly if only they knew how and never cease to mourn their own condition. There is a vast melancholy in the canticles of the wolves, melancholy infinite as the forest, endless as these long nights of winter and yet that ghastly sadness, that mourning for their own, irremediable appetites, can never move the heart for not one phrase in it hints at the possibility of redemption; grace could not come to the wolf from its own despair, only through some external mediator, so that, sometimes, the beast will look as if he half welcomes the knife that despatches him.
The young woman’s brothers searched the outhouses and the haystacks but never found any remains so the sensible girl dried her eyes and found herself another husband not too shy to piss into a pot who spent the nights indoors. She gave him a pair of bonny babies and all went right as a trivet until, one freezing night; the night of the solstice, the hinge of the year when things do not fit together as well as they should, the longest night, her first good man came home again.
A great thump on the door announced him as she was stirring the soup for the father of her children and she knew him the moment she lifted the latch to him although it was years since she’d worn black for him and now he was in rags and his hair hung down his back and never saw a comb, alive with lice.
‘Here I am again, missus,’ he said. ‘Get me my bowl of cabbage and be quick about it.’
Then her second husband came in with wood for the fire and when the first one saw she’d slept with another man and, worse, clapped his red eyes on her little children who’d crept into the kitchen to see what all the din was about, he shouted: ‘I wish I were a wolf again, to teach this whore a lesson!’ So a wolf he instantly became and tore off the eldest boy’s left foot before he was chopped up with the hatchet they used for chopping logs. But when the wolf lay bleeding and gasping its last, the pelt peeled off again and he was just as he had been, years ago, when he ran away from his marriage bed, so that she wept and her second husband beat her.
They say there’s an ointment the Devil gives you that turns you into a wolf the minute you rub it on. Or, that he was born feet first and had a wolf for his father and his torso is a man’s but his legs and genitals are a wolf’s. And he has a wolf’s heart.
Seven years is a werewolf’s natural span but if you burn his human clothing you condemn him to wolfishness for the rest of his life, so old wives hereabouts think it some protection to throw a hat or an apron at the werewolf, as if clothes made the man. Yet by the eyes, those phosphorescent eyes, you know him in all his shapes; the eyes alone unchanged by metamorphosis.
Before he can become a wolf, the lycanthrope strips stark naked. If you spy a naked man among the pines, you must run as if the Devil were after you.

An unaccounted retractor
Suzanne's medical history included four caesarean sections in a 10-year period. The second and third operations were performed at hospital B, and the fourth at hospital C. Two months after her fourth caesarean, Suzanne presented to hospital C suffering severe anal pain.
A doctor performed an anal dilation under general anaesthesia and retrieved a surgical retractor from the rectum that was 15 cm long by two cm wide, with curved ends. It was of a type commonly used by hospitals in the area and the engraved initials indicated it came from hospital B. The doctor thought that the retractor had been left inside Su- zanne after one of her caesareans and it had worked its way gradually through the peritoneum into the rectum.
During her fourth caesarean, the surgeon noted the presence of gross adhesions, or scarring, to the peritoneum, whereas no scarring had been observed by the doctor who had performed the third caesarean two years earlier. While it is not known for certain what had occurred, the instrument was most likely to have been left inside Suzanne during her third caesarean and remained there for more than two years.

Source text - English DOES God exist? This ancient question just won't go away. Since human history began, as soon as someone thought he had the answer someone else came along to challenge it. The question endures, and now rests in the ether, waiting to spring on college students, retreating after the age of thirty, surfacing for the odd cocktail party, and reemerging with full force in the "philosophical years." But before we discuss this complicated question, let me introduce myself. I'm Toby, the talking horse.
Being a talking horse leaves me with plenty of time to ponder these big issues. No one rides me, because I just tell them to get off. So there's a lot of standing time. Sometimes I sing at night, to pass the hours; sometimes I court the little beauty in the next pasture, Lily. Sometimes I develop powers, which is fun. In fact, right now you are not reading this; you only think you are. You are actually calling your bank by Touch-Tone phone and transferring all your money to my account.
Mostly, though, I do anagrams in my head, like many other horses. When you see a horse standing in a field staring at you, he's really rearranging letters in his head: "tide, diet, edit..." It's a horsy thing to do. So the first thing I do with a question as big as the one we're talking about is pass it through my head and rearrange the letters. "Does... odes..." Not much there. Then there's the obvious "god... dog," and the fruitless "exist." Engaging in this little neurotic exercise enables me to move on to the next step.
Ask yourself this: Do I really need know the answer to this question? I think if you are honest with yourself, you will realize that a yea-or-neigh answer wouldn't really change your life much. Although a neigh might free up a lot of time now spent worshipping. In fact, I don't imagine God is really keen on worshipping. You can take it from me, Toby the talking horse -- he's as humble as the next God, and a simple thank-you is all that's required.
If you ask me what came first, the question or the belief, I'd say that the belief preceded the question. The question does not lead to belief; the question leads to disbelief. The belief, on the other hand, exists in almost every human culture, even though you sometimes get people praying to dolls made of dung. The belief does not so naturally arise in animals, which makes me, a horse, the perfect objective moderator.
I'm going to make a ground rule. No arguing. Arguing is what they do on MSNBC, and what good does that do anyone? A big horselaugh to the human idea that reason ever actually changed anyone's mind or proved anything beyond a person's ability to argue. I could argue that the sky is green if I wanted. And win. Why? Because I could study enough to corner you on every proposition; I could become quick-minded on the green-sky-issue. I could have your head spinning with the twists and curves I would throw at you. And I'm a horse. But I could still do it. So imagine what a well-oiled purveyor of religious wisdom could do.
Another ground rule. No definitions. WE could sit here till the cows come home, which in my world is not a metaphor, and discuss the definitions of important words. But let me tell you, we wouldn't get anywhere. It would be easy to reduce the question of God's existence to a problem of semantics. But we're beyond that now. I'm glad my name is Toby, because it proves my point. I am my own definition. I am not "Lucky," or "Copper," or "Ginger," or any other noun. Let's let God be his own definition, just like me.
I have to tell you something about Lily -- She has a yellow mane. I was just thinking about her.
Another thing: please do not mention the phrase "organized religion." I already know where you're going with it, and that argument is for college students who want to have something to talk about when they smoke pot. We're way beyond that discussion.

Source text - English We have shown that there is an almost unavoidable trend toward increasing energy utilization. We have also pointed out that at present the energy used is at least 85% of fossil origin. Finally, we have shown that the fossil fuel reserves seem ample to satisfy our needs for a good fraction of the next millennium. So, what is the problem?.
Most of the easily accessible sources of oil and gas have already been tapped. What is left is getting progressively more expensive to extract. Thus, one part of the problem is economical. Another is political—most of the fuel used by developed nations is imported (using the large American reserves is unpopular and politicians hesitate to approve such exploration).This creates an undesirable vulnerability. The major problem, however, is ecological. Fossil fuels are still the most inexpensive and most convenient of all energy resources, but their use pollutes the environment, and we are quickly approaching a situation in which we can no longer dismiss the problem or postpone the solution.
By far, the most undesirable gas emitted is carbon dioxide whose progressively increasing concentration in the atmosphere (from 270 ppm in the late 1800 to some 365 ppm at present) constitutes a worrisome problem. It is sad to hear influential people (among them, some scientists) dismiss this problem as inconsequential, especially in view of the growing signs of a possible runaway ecological catastrophe. For instance, in the last few decades, the thickness of the north polar ice has decreased by 40% and on the first year of the current millennium, a summertime hole appeared in the polar ice. Since increased concentrations of CO2 can lead to global warming, some people have proposed increasing the emission of SO2 to stabilize the temperature because of the cooling effect of this gas. Even ignoring the vegetation-killing acid rain that would result, this proposal is equivalent to balancing a listing boat by piling stones on the other side.
Public indifference with the CO2 concentration problem may partially be due to the focus on planetary temperature rise. Although the growth in CO2 is very easily demonstrated, the conclusion that the temperature will rise, although plausible, is not easy to prove. There are mechanisms by which an increase of greenhouse gases would actually result in a cooling of Earth. For instance, increasing greenhouse gases would result in enhanced evaporation of the tropical oceans. The resulting moisture, after migrating toward the poles, would fall as snow thereby augmenting the albedo of the planet and, thus, reducing the amount of heat absorbed from the sun.
The Kyoto treaty aims at curbing excessive carbon dioxide emissions. Some scientist and engineers who are less concerned with political correctness, are investigating techniques to reduce (or at least, to stabilize) the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. This can, in principle, be accomplished by reducing emissions or by disposing carbon dioxide in such a way as to avoid its release into the air. Emissions can be reduced by diminishing overall energy consumption (an Utopian solution), by employing alternative energy sources, by increasing efficiency of energy use, and by switching to fuels that yield more energy per amount of carbon emitted.
Renewable forms of energy are attractive but, at least for the present, are too expensive to seriously compete with fossil fuels. Hence, methods for the reduction of carbon dioxide emission are under intense investigation. All these methods have two stages: carbon dioxide capture and carbon dioxide disposal or sequestration.

Por fim, demonstramos que as reservas de combustível fóssil parecem amplas o bastante para satisfazer nossas necessidades por boa parcela do próximo milênio. Então, qual é o problema?
A maioria das fontes facilmente acessíveis de óleo e gás já foi explorada. As que sobraram têm custos de extração cada vez mais altos. Portanto, um aspecto do problema é econômico. Outro, político – boa parte do combustível utilizado por nações desenvolvidas é importada (o uso das grandes reservas dos EUA é uma opção impopular, e políticos hesitam em aprovar essas explorações). Cria-se, então, uma vulnerabilidade indesejada. O maior problema, no entanto, é ecológico. Combustíveis fósseis ainda são os mais econômicos e convenientes de todos os recursos energéticos, mas seu uso polui o meio ambiente, e estamos rapidamente chegando a um ponto em que não podemos mais ignorar o problema ou adiar a solução.

Source text - English This is a good example of a style of dish the French call “terre et mer” – mixing foods of land and sea. It is a warm salad of mussels and two unusual ingredientes found only during the autumn, mousserons and crosnes. Mousserons are tiny, perfeclty formed mushrooms with caps the size of Smarties. Their fairy size gives a false impression, for they are tough little things and respond well to high frying. Crosnes, or Chinese artichokes, are “wild” artichokes with a good earthy flavour. They both need particular preparation. Serves 4 as a starter.
100g mousseron mushrooms
25g butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
300g fresh mussels
1 bay leaf
1 sprig fresh thyme
100ml dry white wine
100g crosnes (or use baby Jerusalem artichokes)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chervil or parsley
2 tablespoons double cream
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 Prepare this dish in stages, then bring everything together just before serving. First, the mousserons. Pick off the stalks so you just have the caps. Heat half the butter in a frying pan and sauté them for 2-3 minutes until softened.
2 Drain off the juice and save it in a small saucepan. Wipe out the frying pan, then heat the remaining butter with a teaspoon of the oil unitl nice and hot. Sauté the mousserons again to get them nice and browned. Drain, saving the juices again, and set aside.
3 Wash the mussels well and pull off any beards. Scrub off the barnacles too, if possible. Discard any mussels that don’t close when you tap them. Heat na empty saucepan until very hot and tip in the mussels, together with the bay leaf, thyme and wine. Clamp on the lid and cook for about 4 minutes.
4 Uncover the pan and drain the liquid into the saucepan with the mousseron juices. Discard any mussels that haven’t opened. Pick out the meat of those that have and cool, then chill for 30 minutes to firm the flesh.
5 To prepare the crosnes, top and tail if necessary, then place in a bowl with a little cold water and rub them between your hands with sea salt. This helps to scrub them clean. Rinse well.
6 Heat the remaining oil in a pan and sauté the crosnes until nicely coloured, about 3 minutes. Tip the mussels into the pan and stir-fry until reheated. Toss in the mousserons and reheat, then divide among four soup plates. Sprinkle with the chervil or parsley.
7 Add the cream to the saved juices and bubble down until reduced by half. Nappé the salad – there will be just enough sauce to moisten everything – and serve.

Este é um bom exemplo de um estilo de prato francês chamado de terre et mer – que mistura alimentos da terra e do mar. É uma salada morna de mexilhões e dois ingredientes raros típicos do outono do hemisfério norte, cogumelos mousserons e alcachofras chinesas. Os mousserons são cogumelos bem pequenos, de formato perfeito e com chapéus do tamanho de confetes. Seu tamanho diminuto passa uma falsa impressão, pois são bastante resistentes e respondem bem às altas temperaturas. Já as alcachofras chinesas, ou crosnes, são tubérculos “selvagens” que têm um sabor bem terroso. Esses dois ingredientes necessitam de preparo especial. Rende 4 entradas.
100g de cogumelos mousseron
25g de manteiga
2 colheres (sopa) de azeite
300g de mexilhões frescos
1 folha de louro
1 ramo fresco de tomilho
100ml de vinho branco seco
100g de alcachofras chinesas (ou minialcachofras de Jerusalém)
1 colher (sopa) de salsinha ou cerefólio frescos
1 colher (sopa) de creme de leite fresco
Sal marinho e pimenta moída na hora a gosto
1 Prepare o prato em etapas e junte tudo logo antes de servir. Primeiro, os mousserons. Corte fora os talos e deixe apenas os chapéus. Aqueça metade da manteiga em uma frigideira e refogue os cogumelos por 2-3 minutos até ficarem macios.
2 Escorra o caldo e reserve em uma panela pequena. Limpe a frigideira e então aqueça o restante da manteiga com uma colher de chá de azeite até ficar bem quente. Refogue os cogumelos novamente até ficarem dourados. Escorra, reserve o caldo mais uma vez e deixe descansar.
3 Lave bem os mexilhões e remova as barbas. Esfregue bem com uma escova pequena para remover possíveis cracas. Descarte aqueles mexilhões que não fecharem quando você der umas batidinhas nele com os dedos. Aqueça uma panela vazia até ficar bem quente e jogue os mexilhões, junto com o louro, o tomilho e o vinho. Tampe a panela e cozinhe por 4 minutos.
4 Destampe e escorra o caldo na mesma panela que contém o caldo de cogumelos. Descarte os mexilhões que continuarem fechados. Retire a carne daqueles que abriram, descartando as conchas, e deixe esfriar. Resfrie na geladeira por mais 30 minutos para firmar a carne.
5 Para preparar as alcachofras chinesas, corte fora as extremidades, se necessário, e então coloque-as em um recipiente com um pouco de água gelada e esfregue-as bem entre as mãos com sal marinho. Isso ajuda a limpá-las. Enxágue bem em seguida.
6 Aqueça o restante do azeite em uma panela e refogue as alcachofras por aproximadamente 3 minutos, até que fiquem douradas. Adicione os mexilhões na panela e os frite até reaquecerem. Adicione os cogumelos, mexa bem até reaquecerem, e então acomode a salada em 4 pratos de sopa. Salpique a salsa.
7 Adicione o creme de leite fresco ao caldo reservado e ferva até reduzir à metade. Espalhe o molho sobre a salada – será suficiente para umedecê-la por inteiro – e sirva.

• Unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity are leading global risks to health.
• Healthy dietary practices start early in life – breastfeeding fosters healthy growth and improves cognitive development, and may have longer-term health benefits, like reducing the risk of becoming overweight or obese and developing NCDs later in life.
• Energy intake (calories) should be in balance with energy expenditure. Evidence indicates that total fat should not exceed 30% of total energy intake to avoid unhealthy weight gain, with a shift in fat consumption away from saturated fats to unsaturated fats, and towards the elimination of industrial trans fats.
• Limiting intake of free sugars to less than 10% of total energy intake is part of a healthy diet. A further reduction to less than 5% of total energy intake is suggested for additional health benefits.
• Keeping salt intake to less than 5 g per day helps prevent hypertension and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke in the adult population.

Overview
Consuming a healthy diet throughout the lifecourse helps prevent malnutrition in all its forms as well as a range of noncommunicable diseases and conditions. But the increased production of processed food, rapid urbanization and changing lifestyles have led to a shift in dietary patterns. People are now consuming more foods high in energy, fats, free sugars or salt/sodium, and many do not eat enough fruit, vegetables and dietary fibre such as whole grains.
The exact make-up of a diversified, balanced and healthy diet will vary depending on individual needs (e.g. age, gender, lifestyle, degree of physical activity), cultural context, locally available foods and dietary customs. But basic principles of what constitute a healthy diet remain the same.
For adults
A healthy diet contains:
• Fruits, vegetables, legumes (e.g. lentils, beans), nuts and whole grains (e.g. unprocessed maize, millet, oats, wheat, brown rice).
• At least 400 g (5 portions) of fruits and vegetables a day. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava and other starchy roots are not classified as fruits or vegetables.
• Less than 10% of total energy intake from free sugars which is equivalent to 50 g (or around 12 level teaspoons) for a person of healthy body weight consuming approximately 2000 calories per day, but ideally less than 5% of total energy intake for additional health benefits. Most free sugars are added to foods or drinks by the manufacturer, cook or consumer, and can also be found in sugars naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates.
• Less than 30% of total energy intake from fats. Unsaturated fats (e.g. found in fish, avocado, nuts, sunflower, canola and olive oils) are preferable to saturated fats (e.g. found in fatty meat, butter, palm and coconut oil, cream, cheese, ghee and lard). Industrial trans fats (found in processed food, fast food, snack food, fried food, frozen pizza, pies, cookies, margarines and spreads) are not part of a healthy diet.
• Less than 5 g of salt (equivalent to approximately 1 teaspoon) per day and use iodized salt.
For infants and young children
In the first 2 years of a child’s life, optimal nutrition fosters healthy growth and improves cognitive development. It also reduces the risk of becoming overweight or obese and developing NCDs later in life.

Source text - Portuguese O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar o impacto dos planos macroeconômicos dos anos 80 no rendimento do trabalho. Para isso, o trabalho irá analisar as medidas adotadas em cada plano e os resultados obtidos. Para tanto, serão utilizados dados disponibilizados pelo Banco Central, Ipeadata e IBGE. Conclui-se que ao longo dos anos 80 o rendimento do trabalho aumentou, mesmo diante de vários momentos de picos inflacionários.
Translation - English The aim of this research is to analyze the impact that the macroeconomic plans of the 1980s had on the work efficiency in Brazil. In order to do that, this work will observe the implemented measures in each plan and the obtained results. The source of the analysis will be data released by the Brazilian Central Bank, Ipeadata (Institute of Applied Economic Research) and IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). From that, it is possible to conclude that throughout the decade of 1980 the work efficiency increased, even when faced with several moments of inflationary peak.
