French to English: Cyrano de Bergerac (last page) par Edmond Rostand General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - French Cyrano.
Tiens , tiens ! – Ha ! ha ! les Compromis,
Les Préjugés, les Lâchetés !...
(il frappe)
Que je pactise ?
Jamais, jamais ! – Ah ! te voilà, toi, la Sottise !
– Je sais bien qu'à la fin vous me me mettrez à bas ;
N'importe : je me bats ! je me bats ! je me bats !
Roxane.
C'est ?...
Cyrano.
Mon panache .
RIDEAU.
Translation - English Cyrano.
So close I can feel his breath,
He does gaze upon my nose, this Angel of Death.
(he raises his sword)
What do you say ?...That it is useless ?...This I know !
But a man does not fight for success's bright glow !
No ! No ! 'Tis more full of beauty whilst done in vain !
What are all of these figures as countless as grain ?
I know all those who did my life antagonize !
Dishonesty ?
(he strikes the air with his sword)
Take that, wretch ! – Ha ! Ha ! Compromise,
Prejudice, Cowardice!...
(he strikes)
Shall I too fall to thee ?
Never, never ! – Oh ! There you are, Stupidity !
– I knew well that at the end you would take my might ;
But what does it matter? I fight! I fight! I fight!
(He swings around wildly, then stops, out of breath.)
Yes, you take all from me, the laurel and the rose !
Take it ! Take it! Still something of mine with me goes!
At the end of the day when I go to my God,
And I enter between the pearly gates, so broad,
Unwrinkled, unstained, that which no one can detach,
One thing I clasp,
(he lunges, sword held high)
and it is …
(The sword falls from his hands, he falters, he falls into the hands of Le Bret and Rageuneau .)
Roxane.
It is ?...
Cyrano.
My Panache .
CURTAIN.
