Source text - English A theme of the age, at least in the developed world, is that people crave silence and can find none. The roar of traffic, the ceaseless beep of phones, digital announcements in buses and trains, TV sets blaring even in empty offices, are an endless battery and distraction. The human race is exhausting itself with noise and longs for its opposite—whether in the wilds, on the wide ocean or in some retreat dedicated to stillness and concentration. Alain Corbin, a history professor, writes from his refuge in the Sorbonne, and Erling Kagge, a Norwegian explorer, from his memories of the wastes of Antarctica, where both have tried to escape.
And yet, as Mr Corbin points out in "A History of Silence", there is probably no more noise than there used to be. Before pneumatic tyres, city streets were full of the deafening clang of metal-rimmed wheels and horseshoes on stone. Before voluntary isolation on mobile phones, buses and trains rang with conversation. Newspaper-sellers did not leave their wares in a mute pile, but advertised them at top volume, as did vendors of cherries, violets and fresh mackerel. The theatre and the opera were a chaos of huzzahs and barracking. Even in the countryside, peasants sang as they drudged. They don’t sing now.
What has changed is not so much the level of noise, which previous centuries also complained about, but the level of distraction, which occupies the space that silence might invade. There looms another paradox, because when it does invade—in the depths of a pine forest, in the naked desert, in a suddenly vacated room—it often proves unnerving rather than welcome. Dread creeps in; the ear instinctively fastens on anything, whether fire-hiss or bird call or susurrus of leaves, that will save it from this unknown emptiness. People want silence, but not that much.

Historicus Alain Corbin schrijft vanuit zijn toevluchtsoord in de Sorbonne, en de Noorse ontdekkingsreiziger Erling Kagge vanuit zijn herinneringen aan de witte wildernis op Antarctica, beide in een poging om te ontsnappen.

De verandering zit 'm niet zozeer in de hoeveelheid lawaai, waarover in voorgaande eeuwen ook werd geklaagd, maar in de hoeveelheid afleiding, die de ruimte in beslag neemt waar de stilte binnen zou kunnen dringen. Er doemt nog een paradox op, want als de stilte daadwerkelijk binnendringt – in een donker naaldbos, in de kale woestijn, in een plotseling lege kamer – dan blijkt ze vaak eerder ongemakkelijk dan welkom. Een sluipende angst, het oor pint zich onwillekeurig ergens op vast, of het nu een sissende vlam is, een kwetterende vogel of ritselend blad, om verlost te worden van deze onbekende leegte. Mensen willen stilte, maar zo veel hoeft nu ook weer niet.

Source text - English Complementarity determining regions (CDRs) are part of the variable chains in immunoglobulins (antibodies) and T cell receptors, generated by B-cells and T-cells respectively, where these molecules bind to their specific antigen. As the most variable parts of the molecules, CDRs are crucial to the diversity of antigen specificities generated by lymphocytes.
There are three CDRs (CDR1, CDR2 and CDR3), arranged non-consecutively, on the amino acid sequence of a variable domain of an antigen receptor. Since the antigen receptors are typically composed of two variable domains (on two different polypeptide chains, heavy and light chain), there are six CDRs for each antigen receptor that can collectively come into contact with the antigen. A single antibody molecule has two antigen receptors and therefore contains twelve CDRs. Sixty CDRs can be found on a pentameric IgM molecule.

Source text - English Optimal development of our relationship system requires secure attachment formed through attunement with our caregivers, especially during the first three years of life. The way an adult responds to a child’s distress determines whether their attachment bond is secure or insecure. Secure attachment requires us to be seen, be soothed and feel safe. A toddler may feel distress due to hunger, not getting what he wants or feeling tired. An attuned adult would respond to this distress in a soothing way. This would promote secure attachment. A lack of attunement means the adult’s response (or failure to respond) offers no relief. This would promote insecure attachment.
We can easily recognize securely attached children: they are able to use friends or adults to help them through stressful situations. We can also recognize children with insecure attachments: they withdraw from the help they desperately need and/or actively fight when offered soothing nurturance during difficult times. Children with insecure attachment can seem like wounded animals. Even when we approach with loving intentions and a compassionate heart, they may metaphorically (or literally) bite us if we try to get too close.

Hoe een volwassene reageert op een kind dat overstuur is, bepaalt of het kind zich veilig of onveilig hecht aan hem of haar. Je raakt veilig gehecht als je gezien en getroost wordt, en als je je veilig kunt voelen. Een dreumes kan zich om allerlei redenen niet fijn voelen. Hij heeft honger, krijgt niet wat hij wil of is moe. Een goed afgestemde volwassene reageert door het kind te troosten. Dat bevordert een veilige hechting. Als de volwassene niet goed is afgestemd op het kind, helpt zijn reactie (of gebrek daaraan) niet. Uiteindelijk kan dit leiden tot een onveilige hechting.
Veilig gehechte kinderen zijn gemakkelijk te herkennen: op lastige momenten zoeken ze steun bij hun vrienden of bij volwassenen. Ook onveilig gehechte kinderen kun je herkennen: ze accepteren geen hulp, ook al hebben ze die nog zo hard nodig en/of ze stribbelen tegen als je hen probeert te troosten en te koesteren op lastige momenten.
Een onveilig gehecht kind lijkt soms wel een gewond dier. Zelfs als je het met een liefdevolle intentie en vol medeleven benadert, kun je bij wijze van spreken (of letterlijk) worden gebeten zodra je te dichtbij komt.

Source text - Swedish I dag är uppskattningsvis 30 000–50 000 barn i Sverige så feta att de riskerar att dö i förtid på grund av följdsjukdomar som diabetes, cancer och hjärtinfarkt.
Men det är inte bara svenska barn som äter godis. Även svenska vuxna som äter stora mängder sötsaker, bidrar till den bedrövliga statistiken och sticker ut internationellt.
Något som skulle kunna kallas för ett barnsligt dysfunktionellt konsumtionsmönster, är i Sverige ett accepterat socialt beteende, som ingen i vuxenomgivningen skulle rynka på näsan åt.
Tvärtom. Här är det oförblommerade godisätandet närmast att betrakta som en social framgångsfaktor – man har barnasinnet kvar!
