Source text - Russian 1.
21. «Madshus», «Fischer», «Rossignol»…
Translation - English 1. The World Cup event in “Demino” gave the citizens of Rybinsk and Yaroslavl a chance to be proud of their country. Russian flags were most in demand in “Demino” that day.
2. The governor of the Yaroslavl Region, Anatoly Vakhrukov, and his family at the start line of the “Lyzhnya Rossii 2008” race.
3. Brought to Russia by one of the sponsors of the competitions, a lovely cow named Milka immediately became Russians’ favorite thanks to its easy-going character and delicious chocolate.
4. The Austrian drink producer RAUCH and the German heating systems manufacturer VIESSMANN are among the main sponsors of the FIS World Cup.
5. Pictured is one of the quarterfinals in the women’s sprint competitions. Vesna Fabjan (#7) of Slovenia is in the lead; she will have reached Final A and ended up respectable fifth. Following in her steps is the winner of the last year’s “Demino” World Cup women’s 15 km freestyle race, Norwegian Astrid Jacobsen (#7), who will have struck silver on the day.
6. Mass start of the women’s 15 km freestyle race. For the moment, the Russian “national group” members Diana Sapronova (#41), Natalya Ilyina (#39), Olga Mikhailova (#40), Olga Kuzyukova (#46), and Olga Nutrikhina (#44) are trailing the pack; due to a deficit of FIS points they had to start in the last row. Eventually, though, our athletes will have ended up placed closer to the middle of the finishers list.
7. This huge snowman (its size can be guessed by the length of the step-ladder leaned against the snow giant) became a true highlight of the “Demino” stadium.
8. During the first World Cup event in “Demino”, the organizers were facing the problem of insufficient parking space for the large number of cars near the stadium. As a result, a big traffic jam occurred on the road leading to “Demino”. This problem was resolved the next year once a new parking lot of surprisingly large capacity had been built. Moreover, the parking lot provided for separate parking of cars and buses.
9. The parking lot has the capacity to accommodate 4,000 cars! To put it into perspective, each of the MEGA and IKEA shopping centers in Moscow have 5,000 parking slots.
10. This pedestrian path has been made only this year. It connects the parking lot with the stadium; thanks to it, people didn’t have to tread through snow or climb fences in order to reach their destination. There was enough space for everyone in the stands and alongside the track, too.
11. A regular visitor of cross-country skiing competitions across the whole Russia from Khanty-Mansiysk to Rybinsk is Rwandan Domacien Nyabogabo. After graduating from the Leningrad Institute of Culture, Domacien moved to the Urals, married a Russian girl named Natalya, and currently has three children. He decided not to go back to Rwanda after graduation because of the civil war which has been going on there for years. In a small town in the Sverdlovsk Region, Domacien has built himself a house, and presently works there as a farmer growing potatoes. He is also a keen cross-country skier, and from time to time acts as a performer at various events. For example, Domacien Nyabogabo is a real star and front man of the Russian sprint series “Sprint Tour”, which he came to present in “Demino” during the World Cup event together with the main organizers of the competitions, Sergey Batalov and Victor Maygurov.
12. Jürg Capol and Vegard Ulvang are the two people whose names are associated with the changes that currently take place in the world of cross-country skiing.
13. Apart from the snowman, various performing artists and Russian fairy-tale characters were lifting the spirits of spectators at the stadium. It is hardly conceivable that any competitions in Russia could be held without its traditional mascot, the bear, present. And near the bear is a beautiful downhill lady skier…
14. Yuri Lastochkin, General Manager of NPO “Saturn”, the main sponsor of the “Demino” ski center and the World Cup event, and Vladimir Loginov, President of the Russian Cross-Country Skiing Federation (below on the right), are talking in the stadium stands. Who knows, maybe they are discussing the prospects of World winter sports championships to be held in “Demino”?
15. Fans have come to “Demino” from all over Russia; all athletes cited an incredible support provided by spectators at the stadium and alongside the track. Most importantly, Russian fans cheered not only domestic athletes but foreign ones as well, which resulted in a very festive and friendly atmosphere reigning over “Demino”.
16. French athletes were in an excellent mood before the start while testing their skis.
17. The 1972 Sapporo Olympic champions Alevtina Olyunina (left) and Lyubov Mukhacheva (right) pictured against the exceptionally fitting catchphrase of the “Demino” World Cup event, “The Russians are coming!” Who else but these two Russian skiers have the right to be pictured with this slogan in the background?! In 1972 Japan, virtually all rivals were trembling at the prospect of having to compete against Olyunina and Mukhacheva…
18. Final moments of the countdown of the women’s 15 km mass start race.
19. Two minutes to the start; it’s time to take off the warm-up clothes. Pictured from left to right are Russian Larisa Kurkina (#10), Yulia Chekalyova (her bib number is not visible), Evgeniya Medvedeva (#16), and Olga Rocheva (#14).
20. The living mascot of “Demino”, bear Dyomka, met a good-looking downhill lady skier at the World Cup event.
21. Madshus, Fischer, Rossignol… Brands of all flags have come to us…
22. Evgeniya Medvedeva will have said that day, “Here in “Demino”, we had an absolutely astonishing support from fans”.
23. Finally, mere seconds remain before the start of the women’s 15 km race.
24. Olga Rocheva is the top Russian in the current World Cup standings.
25. This Italian girl named Marina Piller could have been born a Masha Ivanova; so much she resembles our Northern beauties thanks to her scarlet cheeks and wheat-blonde hair…
26. The very last uphill before the stadium. It is clear from this picture that spectators were lining up along the whole track, wherever they could find space, literally resembling a live hedge…
27. Bronze medalist of the women’s 15 km race Riitta-Liisa Roponen is interviewed by commentator at the stadium, Andrey Kondrashov.
28. Norwegian Astrid Jacobsen (#2) is overjoyed after winning the women’s 15 km race. But Russian Natalia Korosteleva (#11), the runner-up, will have no less reason to be triumphant; never before had she climbed this high on the podium in World Cup individual races.
29. Off to testing with an armful of skis; tomorrow is the day.
30. Russian fans more and more resemble their European counterparts…
31. The Russian fans are ecstatic.
32. Yuri Lastochkin, General Manager of NPO “Saturn”, salutes the spectators.
33. The podium of the women’s 15 km race (left to right): Russian Natalia Korosteleva (silver), Norwegian Astrid Jacobsen (gold), and Riitta-Liisa Roponen of Finland (bronze).
34. Olga Zavyalova (right) and Tatyana Yambaeva (left) during roller-ski training in “Demino” in 2005; they were members of SC “Saturn” based in “Demino” at the time.
35. World champion Olga Zavyalova imitation training in “Demino” in 2005.
36. A good shot for the “Demino” ski center hall of fame… An army of skiers moves down the corridor made up of spectators. As athletes themselves noted, there were no such spots on the track where they wouldn’t be cheered by fans.
37. Czech Jiri Magal (#24) and Ivan Alypov (#59) of Russia are performing a pas de deux on skis during the men’s 30 km race.
38. Vegard Ulvang, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Cross-Country Committee of the International Ski Federation (FIS), is watching the competitions from the outside. Many have got used to seeing the famous Norwegian, a three-time Olympic champion, on the track. At the World Cup 2007 event in “Demino”, though, he was present as an official FIS delegate; it is noteworthy that he actually praised the level of organization of the competitions. Professional career of the Norwegian cross-country skiing star ended in 1997, and in 2006 he became Chairman of the FIS cross-country skiing committee. Many initiatives have been accomplished by the Norwegian since then, of which one of the most significant is the “Tour de Ski” series, which became quite popular from the very beginning.
39. Ilya Chernousov (#29) of Russia and Olympic champion Giorgio Di Centa (#22) of Italy are at the food station. It is evident from the picture that very few wish to have a bite yet after the first several kilometers of the race. But Ilya and Giorgio must have assumed that it would have been a lot more problematic to get some food onboard later in the race, and so they decided to load up on some vital liquid straight away. Their concerns were quite well-founded; from 2007 onwards, new FIS rules were put in place that do not permit feeding athletes on the move and outside designated areas. In other words, drinks can be consumed strictly in designated areas, and the person handing it out cannot move. Due to this innovation, not everyone has time to grab him or herself a drink as a queue forms near the food station increasing the risk of time loss. Besides, the customary shift to the right may cause collisions…
40. Pictured are the Russian team’s “work-horses”; masseurs Valery Popov, Boris Lifatov, and Victor Sergeev.
41. Rene Sommerfeldt (#2) of Germany is in the lead. He is chased by Morten Eilifsen (#15) of Norway, Valerio Cecchi (#14) of Italy, and Russian Alexander Legkov (#3). In line with them but distinctly apart on the right is Italian Pietro Piller Cottrer (#19).
42. View of the stadium from several hundred meters. On the left, behind glass are heated VIP stands; on the right, open-air stands. As we can see, the stands that can accommodate 5,000 spectators are full up! A similar number of fans are currently standing alongside the track supporting the athletes as they run the race. It is getting noticeably dark, and the stadium floodlights have been switched on.
43. Winner Tor Arne Hetland (center) and the competition’s medalists, Ville Nousiainen (silver, on the left) and Pietro Piller Cottrer (bronze, on the right), on the podium during the flower award giving ceremony.
44. At a food station during the 30 km freestyle race: Pietro Piller Cottrer (#19), Remo Fischer (#34), and Valerio Cecchi (#14). Splashes coming out of Cottrer’s cup point to the downside of the new rule, which doesn’t permit the person handing out a drink to run along.
45. Ville Nousiainen of Finland acknowledges the support of fans in the stands by throwing them a flower bunch. Nousiainen’s second place came as a big surprise even to himself; this silver medal became his top career achievement.
46. Sergey Kryanin on the “Demino” roller-ski track in 2005. This track is very picturesque; it looks as if skiers roll down on their roller-skis gliding over the Volga. Fresh wind from the river, steamers and barges tooting their horns, quality asphalt and an excellent track profile; what else could a skier wish for to feel happy?!
47. Sergey Kryanin takes part in the Yaroslavl Region open cross country running championships held in “Demino” in 2005. That year, the list of participants in those competitions was hardly inferior to that of the Russian national championships…
48. The 2006 Turin Olympics individual sprint gold medalist Chandra Crawford (#3) of Canada and young Norwegian Celine Brun-Lee (#18) are in the lead in one of the quarterfinals of the women’s sprint competitions.
49. Sandra Spitz, Press Secretary of the International Ski Federation (FIS), ushers athletes to the podium during the flower award giving ceremony. In front is the happy winner, Kikkan Randall (#2) of the USA; Astrid Jacobsen (#4) of Norway is second; and our very own “Demino” 2007 star, who climbed the podium for the second time in two days, Natalia Korosteleva (#5), is third.
50. Yuri Lastochkin, General Manager of NPO “Saturn”, is giving the award to the bronze medalist of the women’s individual sprint race, Natalia Korosteleva. She has already managed to become an idol of many a local “Demino” cross-country ski devotees thanks to her long-time tenure at the local sports club “Saturn”. Natalia’s successful performance in this World Cup event has become a real present to all Russian fans!
Perhaps, that’s exactly what Yuri made the point of telling when giving the prize to his former “protégée”.
51. American Kikkan Randall is overwhelmed with joy; winning the sprint race at the World Cup event in “Demino” has become her best career achievement to date.
52. An incredible finish of women’s Final B! The first four athletes, including Natalya Matveeva of Russia, currently the holder of the sprint World Cup’s red leader vest (pictured on extreme left), were separated by split seconds! Based on a photo finish check, the win in the race and the seventh place overall was awarded to Ewi Sachenbacher (#10) of Germany, Natalya Matveeva was second, Virpi Kuitunen third, and Celine Brun-Lee of Norway fourth.
53. At the finish of one of the quarterfinals; Katrin Zeller (#19) of Germany, Madoka Natsumi (#22) of Japan, Virpi Kuitunen (#12) of Finland, Arianna Follis (#9) of Italy; and hardly visible in the right corner is American Kikkan Randall winning the race… One hour later, the American will have climbed the top rung on the competitions’ podium.
54. In the lead of one of the semifinals is Natalya Matveeva, currently the holder of the red leader vest of the World Cup sprint program.
One would probably agree that in this picture the “DEMINO” inscription on the slope opposite the stadium somewhat resembles the world-famous HOLLYWOOD engraving on the hill overlooking the American film industry headquarters.
55. One of the men’s quarterfinal runs.
56. Natalia Korosteleva at the finish line of the women’s individual sprint race at the World Cup event in “Demino”. Her second place in the mass start and third in the sprint the next day was the Russian’s biggest career achievement to date.
57. Mass start of the 2008 “Demino” marathon.
58. Two hours later the chain of participants will have stretched over several miles, but at the moment the skiers have to tussle over each meter of the track despite the “Demino” starting area being sufficiently wide.
59. Oleg Lebedev and his friends have come to “Demino” from the town of Kostroma.
60. Skiers of all ages have come to take part in the “Demino” marathon…
61. As long as Nikolay takes care of the final result verification, one can be sure there will be no errors!
62. The race supervisory commission.
63. What during the days of the World Cup event served as a heated VIP stand, protected from all elements and overlooking the stadium, has now turned into yet another off the cuff changing room for the marathon participants.
64. One of the participants of the forthcoming race. Indeed, both young and old surrender to the “Demino” marathon…
65. Badge belonging to Alexandra Arkhipova, a 30 km “Demino” marathon race participant.
66. Skiers who have just started on the 2008 “Demino” marathon are facing a tedious task of running across local forests and fields; at the moment, they are setting off for one of their first 25-kilometer loops.
67. The winner and the medalists of the 2008 “Demino” marathon. Pictured (left to right) are Aleksey Ivanov of Belarus (silver), Anders Aukland of Norway (gold), and Nikolay Parchevski of Belarus (bronze).
68. While traveling from Moscow to Rybinsk, you are not going to see names such as “Barvikha Hills” or “Primevill”, “Greenfield” or “Wiesendorf”; here, everything is very much different. “There’s Russian odour, Russian spirit”; this would be the most accurate description coming to mind in the circumstances…
69. A quick look at the preparation routine of Ilya Yevseev, a skier from Moscow. There’s a map of the marathon track lying on the wooden bench next to him; on the margins, there are markings meant for Ilya’s wife. These will tell her where to stand just in case a pole breaks; where to give her husband a new cap; where to offer him an Isostar drink or an energy gel…
70. There are many participant sheets to be filled; and there are not enough tables and chairs to accommodate everyone. But, as they say in Russia, the more the merrier!
71. All the time, while the “Demino” marathon race was on, onlookers and fans at the stadium were kept entertained by various performing actors, bands and ensembles.
72. The virtual swirling river made up of skiers startles one’s imagination no less than the real Volga River, the symbol of Russia, which flows a few hundred meters away from the spot where this picture was taken.
73. Jorgen Aukland will have brought home one more souvenir from “Demino”; the picture of a mock skier from “Demino” with his own face pasted over.
74. Dmitry Korovkin, Executive Director of the “Demino” marathon, and Svetlana Emelina, manager of the ski stadium and the local sports school, a lady of extraordinary business acumen who handles an enormous workload, are the two key personalities of the “Demino” marathon organization.
75. A group of skiers at one of the uphills in the forested part of the track.
76. The existence of a superior infrastructure, which the “Demino” marathon “inherited” from the World Cup event, is still a major advantage vis-à-vis competitors, who may or may not survive going forward… The “Demino” marathon is moving forward by leaps and bounds, which makes it very likely that these competitions will indeed become the most popular and favored ones among Russian skiers.
77. Happy about his achievement, Anders Aukland shows off one of his prizes… It is hard to contain one’s emotions when receiving such rare skis as a prize, especially since they are bearing the logo of the main sponsor of these competitions and the whole “Demino” ski center, NPO “Saturn”! The ski manufacturer Fischer made to order a small batch of skis of its old 1982 model with the “SATURN” engraved on them. It is worth noting that this project has produced some real excitement among the public, especially those amateur skiers who were competing in the 80s of the last century. The winner of the 2008 “Demino” marathon became one of the happy owners of a pair of those rare skis.
78. Anders Aukland is on his way to the gold medal cheered by the commentator of the event, Andrey Kondrashov. In an outright fight over the last few meters of the race, the Norwegian managed to outrun Aleksey Ivanov of Belarus by mere split seconds. The Belarusian had come to the finishing stretch in front; however, he then didn’t manage to preserve his lead.
79. Vladimir Sporykhin from the town of Ryazan must have become used to being called “Redhead”. What’s more, he must have learnt by now not to bear grudge. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have dared come to the “Demino” marathon wearing this glamorous outfit and a uniquely remarkable red beard…
80. Rivals on the track, “brothers in arms” after the finish. Pictured is the friendly handshake of the race winner, Anders Aukland (#21), and the runner-up of the 2008 “Demino” marathon, Aleksey Ivanov (#8).
81. Among the 2008 “Demino” marathon participants, there were professional athletes as well as amateurs, such as for example Galina Shubyakina (#430) from the town of Tula, who accidentally tripped over her feet when finishing.
82. The men medalists of the 2008 “Demino” marathon at the award giving ceremony.
83. Aleksey Ivanov (left) of Belarus will have lost mere centimeters at the finish to Anders Aukland (right) of Norway.
84. Where else but in “Demino” can one enjoy such a beautiful view from the track? As one climbs the uphill, the mighty mother of all rivers, the Volga, flows over the precipice behind century-old spruces…
