Source text - English Plaque is a fatty substance that can build up in any artery (large blood vessel) in our bodies; this disease process is called atherosclerosis, commonly known as “hardening of the arteries.” Plaque sticks to the inside walls of arteries and causes them to harden and become narrow. The narrowed artery cannot deliver as much blood and oxygen to the body, and the decreased blood and oxygen flow results in pain in the area of the body fed by the diseased artery. Over time, plaque build-up continues and can severely or even totally block the artery, resulting in more serious complications such as amputation, heart attack, and stroke, depending on which arteries are diseased. When plaque forms in the leg arteries it is called Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
