I have a leather, adjustable, swivel office chair. It has a tall back and arm rests. For lumbar support I bought a small special cushion (Orthia).

I alternate between standing, sitting on a Swiss ball, sitting on a wooden chair, slouching on a sofa, exercising and doing other stuff.
I have a really dodgy back and find that avoiding any one position for too long is the most important thing.
(That and working as few hours as possible.)

I use a kneeling chair. In theory, you can't slouch on a kneeling chair. In practice, I can, but it does make me sit more actively.
I also have a Swiss ball, which I used when my back was giving me trouble a couple of years ago.
I try to alternate between sitting and standing, but for the last few weeks my boyfriend has had sole use of our standing desk because he has a hamstring injury and shouldn't sit.

I don't only have a bad back, I also can't sit due to an injury in my thigh. So I work in any possible position, even walking on my treadmill. I also work out a lot in between jobs. I never stay in one position for longer than 2 hours or so.

Vico Magistretti spent his whole life studying the human body and designing chairs. His adjustable height Maui swivel office chair, with castors and arms, is perfect for desk work. It's also beautiful. Not cheap but hey - you gedda whadda you-a pay-a for. I'm sitting on one now, writing this. Lower back support: perfect. Elbows: supported. No cushion required.

I had a list of priorities and the time for the chair hasn't come yet.
I started with a new PC, then a mechanical keyboard, then an air-conditioner, then 16 GB memory cards, then a new desk. I hope the chair (gamer) will be my next acquisition. But I also changed my car last month, no not so soon.

Some time ago I went shopping for an ergonomic chair. I'm 5'1 and I found that most of them were much too wide and deep for me, with the armrests too far away from my body. One day I went into a drugstore that often carries a few pieces of fairly low-priced furniture and my eye fell on an office chair, priced at 99 dollars Canadian. Of course I do, how can someone's back in our business possibly survive painless without a decent chair. I have been using a Herman Miller Aeron for over 10 years now, it's very expensive but worth every euro.

The best chair I ever used was borrowed from someone in the same building as my place of employment. It was a wooden kneeling chair, quite wide. I used it the way I was supposed to, but for variety, sometimes I would perch on the edge of the top part and put my feet on the kneeling part. Apparently they are from Switzerland and very expensive, and I was told they don´t export them to the U.S. any more.
I did find an inexpensive one with rollers at an office supply, made of metal, with no vertical bar between the knees (I can´t figure out why they put that bar there! You end up rubbing your knees, etc. against that hard bar and it hurts.). I have recovered it 4 times, putting a new piece of thick foam on it each time. This is my main chair working at home.
I also have a bouncy, swivel chair (yoga ball inside), but I usually don´t use it for more than about an hour at a time. ▲ Collapse
