At the moment I need to make a bit more effort!!

A close relative has married an Italian, and a lot of her family only speak Italian. But they are lovely people, and we enjoy talking to them when we can. Apart from that, it is a real advantage to be able to read the Italian guidebooks and signs, even if we don´t understand them completely. They are usually better than the English versions or other languages we can try.

It is also a good way to pick up more Italian. My best wishes to all Italians as their country is recovering from the pandemic, perhaps we can visit again next year.

Meanwhile my husband and I have a very good Italian teacher here in Denmark and a small class of fellow students, so we plan to start lessons again in the autumn.

Refreshing somewhat dormant ones Jul 23, 2020

I've been thinking of brushing up my French and Catalan as I don't use them much, especially oral skills.

A bit of a refresh Jul 23, 2020

Though a few years back my translation work was quite balanced regarding my four source languages, I can’t say the same today as almost all my work is from English to Portuguese. So, I’m trying very hard to do a bit of a refresh before any of those three decide to leave my long-term memory.

Other / sort of Jul 23, 2020

I just started learning JavaScript, although I'm not sure it's relevant here

When talking about human languages, I'm just trying to refresh and maintain the ones I don't get to use very much anymore. That's enough for now, not planning to start anything new yet.

German and Korean Jul 23, 2020

I am learning German and Korean. So far I am learning at home, by myself, with resources I can find online. I take my time.
I guess my brain is need of this type of "fuel" these days!

Due to the dire depressing state of the market, especially in Brazil, I am thinking of learning a new language to boost my job possibilities. I am deciding between Italian (I already studied it for two years so could pick it up easily) and Esperanto (easy to learn and interesting for a pro-peace person like me, but not sure if there would be many jobs Esperanto/English). I also thought of Slovenian (the incredibly complex grammar put me off) and Welsh (the mutations put me off - the town is Bangor, but for some reason 'in Bangor' is ym Mhangor or something like that. 'Day' is dydd, but sometimes it appears as 'ddydd', and so on)

So I'll probably stay with Italian and possibly learn Esperanto too. As mentioned, I already studied Italian for two years, and mie parole preferite sono gli gnocchi ai quattro formaggi, rondelli ai quattro formaggi, ravioli ai quattro formaggi, cannelloni, pizza di ciocolatto, ed il tiramisù. Le paste in Brasile sono meravigliosi! (The biggest pasta restaurant in the world is actually in Curitiba, Brazil. The name is Madalosso. It can host 5,000 people at one sitting and has nine big rooms, each named after an Italian city, so Verona, Firenze etc)

Christine: You mentioned visiting Italy, but Brazil is another interesting option. Some parts of the country are very much Italianised, especially São Paulo (Moóca and Brás neighbourhoods) and the South of the country. One town is called Nova Trento, the name sounds so Italianised. In São Paulo, there is a pizzaria called O Comilão (which translates as 'The Glutton') where there are 109 (!) different flavours of pizza.

There is also Nova Veneza (New Venice) where Italian culture is maintained and the Veneto and Bergamasco dialects are still heard:

No, but Jul 23, 2020

I feel I am too old already to learn a new language, and time is never enough.
In 2010, I started to learn the basics of Arabic Egyptian online, but the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, and a turning point in my life in that year made to give up on learning.
Also, it is not an easy language. I have encountered many problems in spelling "certain" letters. I found it too difficult.
One of its most prominent features is the calligraphy. I find it amazing! It is an art!

In that time, every progress I made was very rewarding for me.
Maybe one day I will restore my classes of Egyptian Arabic, or another variant... I like the Iraqi and Lebanese Arabic. I hope it!
Now, I am thinking of learning to speak the "language of music", which is playing an instrument: violin, guitar, or oud.
Like Albert Einstein said, "Once you stop learning, you start dying".
I wish all the best to all members here who are learning a new language!
