Experience of AnyCount 3.0?

Hello, I have just tried the demo version of AnyCount 3.0 on a Powerpoint file. The figure it gave me for line and character count seemed excessive, so I did a manual count to check. Sure enough, the AnyCount figure is twice that of my manual count.
I'd like to know if this reflects the general performance of the tool or not. Does anyone have experience of using AnyCount?
TIA,
Orla

Each tool counts differently Oct 23, 2004

No matter which CAT or other tool you choose, you will get a different counting result and the difference can be huge.

This is one of the reasons why you have to agree in advance with your client which CAT/counting tool will be used.

Embedded Objects and Text Boxes Oct 23, 2004

The other thing with counting tools that's worth noting is that they count some things that Word doesn't - e.g. embedded objects (a real paint in the proverbial!) and text boxes.

Sarah

Check if track is on Oct 24, 2004

Not sure about Power Point files but some programs count the deleted words also if the Track is ON in MSWord files.

Thanks all - problem still persists Oct 26, 2004

Thanks for all your replies. Harry, I am currently just testing AnyCount, so there's no client involved (thankfully!) yet. Sarah, I unchecked all the 'include in count' options in AnyCount (e.g. slide notes, footers, etc.) but it made no difference, I still got the same inflated result. There's nothing in the tool settings about embedded objects, but this presentation doesn't have any anyway. Anil, there's no Track Changes, at least not in my version of PPT, so I don't think it could be that eit... See more

Comparing figures Oct 26, 2004

With "manual count", do you mean you counted the words you can see?
You have at least two other counting ways to compare the results:
a) file/properties/statistics
b) Trados 6.5 Analysis

There are many other CATs and tools to count words in PPT files, but I think Trados and the file properties are the most common ones.

Thanks but I need character count with spaces Oct 26, 2004

Hi Harry,
Thanks for that. What I mean is I copied all the (visible) text into Word and got a character count from there. Is that what you meant?
Re. your suggestions: I tried both the PPT file/properties/statistics and the Trados approach. Both are great, except that I need a character count with spaces, and PPT only gives me a word total, while Trados gives me a character total without spaces.
That's why I was hopeful about AnyCount - it gives a character count with spaces.<

I'd recommend using PractiCount Toolbar for MS Office (from the makers of PractiCount and Invoice) - http://practiline.com/download/PCToolbarWEP.exe. It can count all sorts of statistics in PowerPoint files you can imagine (characters with spaces included). Just use the 'Report' feature to see how much text contains each file section.

Compare with Practicount results Oct 27, 2004

Practicount costs about two times more than Anycount, but it would be interesting to see whether the Practicount figure will also be twice that of your manual count.

Since Practicount is a widespread tool, it could "justify" the results of Anycount.

Dear Orla,

Our technical writer has noticed your post today and told me about it so I would be pleased to answer as well It certainly does not reflect the general performance of the tool because it has been a part of Translation Office 3000 for a long time and has great sales since it has been released as a standalone product.

Therefore, it has a long history and big number of users, and works perfectly in 99.9% of situations, as far as I can judge from support archive.

Of course, even before the release we did extensive tests of AnyCount on our 'Document Zoo', which is basically a huge collection of documents of various file types. We have collected these 'pets' from public sources on the Web, and compared results reported by AnyCount for each of these documents against manual count.

However, there may be some rare cases (because a number of documents variations is really big) when AnyCount may provide results, which are not perfect. We quickly study such cases (there were only 3 or 4 such cases during 2004) and provide necessary enhancements, or clarify the situation. Please, send your document to [email protected] and we will research it, and delete after research from our test systems.

Best regards,
Vladimir.
