Source text - English Biotech investors are focused on new data showing Erbitux, the cancer drug sold by ImClone Systems and Bristol-Myers Squibb, extends the lives of lung cancer patients by five weeks.
But another Erbitux-related development may be even more important: the stunning realization that a genetic test predicts which colon cancer patients will benefit from the drug.
The emerging data, much of it being released at a big meeting of cancer specialists this weekend in Chicago, reveal that Erbitux is utterly ineffective in about 40% of colon cancer patients whose tumors have a mutation in a gene called kras. The findings could lead the Food and Drug Administration to restrict usage only to those 60% of patients without the mutation.

Translation - English The new IRS (indoor residual spraying) operation included in the strategic plan will enhance the protection of populations against malaria. In fact, the tests of effectiveness of mosquito nets and vector susceptibility to insecticides made in 2009 showed a decrease in the sensitivity of anopheles mosquitoes in some areas. Given this situation it was necessary to identify other complementary strategies that can be combined with the use of LLINs ( long-lasting insecticidal nets). It is in this sense that the IRS was identified and confirmed by a feasibility study conducted in 2010 throughout the territory.
Furthermore, all the neighboring countries of Togo implement the IRS with the assistance of partners. There is a risk that Togo become a potential reservoir of selected vectors. Therefore the two contexts mentioned above reinforce the consistent implementation of the IRS approach in Togo. But this strategy was not addressed by the ninth round of the GFATM ( Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria) project. Moreover, as part of universal coverage and according to the revised GMAP (Global Malaria Action Plan) specific objective (Target 1.2) , 50% of patients seen in health facilities must be properly treated by 2013, 100% by 2015. The private sector in Togo covers about 30% of care needs. Here too the ninth round of the Global Fund project does not include intervention nor resources for private patients.
Such universal coverage achieved must be maintained (revised GMAP Target 2.2 ) and a campaign to distribute LLINs to all households must be organized as part of universal access within three years after July 2011. It is in this sense that the 2014 campaign is planned according to the strategic plan of 2011, supported by Round 9.
The current strategy of social mobilization relies mainly on local media. Unfortunately, some disadvantaged social groups do not have access to media. The fight against malaria is after all a matter of changing behavior; strengthening communication for behavioral change, without exception, is of the essence. Therefore, the 2011-2015 Strategic Plan includes the implementation of local communication based on the involvement of community organizations and mobile outreach strategies.
