Source text - English 『

| Translation - Japanese When the skewness is considered, simplification commonly used in the application of portfolio theory would no longer be applied.
These applications are based on the assumption where investors measure risks mainly with variances only.
Researches have proved that the position where there is no combined allocation of shares and bonds is more likely to give a symmetrical return.
In other words, the possibility of a certain degree of high return is realised as often as that of low return (this is true, however, when either high or low in return does not result in extreme level).
Therefore it is considered that the return under the normal circumstances can be expressed by applying the expected return and the variance alone.
Though the investors’ preference on skewness needs to be taken into consideration in order to analyse the position fairly completely for the return produced by option position has skewness. (or; When, however, the investors’ preference on skewness be ignored, the analysis of the position would result fairly incomplete because the return of the option position has skewness.)
If investors prefer the symmetrical outcome to asymmetrical one, you either adjust the position of shares and bonds accordingly as the time goes on, or you take the position of fixed option.
For example, if you buy put option against the holding shares, possibility of gaining a small loss will be increased, and that of gaining a huge loss will be reduced instead (positive skewness).
On the other hand, if you place a call(selling) against holding shares, the possibility of gaining a small return is increased, and that of gaining a large return is reduced instead(negative skewness).
However investors may not accept those trade-off relations depending on the utility function pattern.
It can be certainly said that the option is traded basically because it could turn the nearly symmetrical outcome resulted from the fixed shares and bonds position into much better fixed position despite its large skewness.
