Safety Award 2005: working together pays off
On 30 May 2005, the third annual Safety Award for contractor companies has been distributed at the Rheinmünster site. John Sampson, Site Leader Rhine Center, and Peter Schaub, Head of Maintenance and SMAT Chairman, handed out the awards during a small ceremony. SMAT stands for “Supplier Management Action Team” and is a Dow task force that is responsible for the cooperation with the contractor companies and conducts the yearly Safety Awards evaluations.
Four contractor companies that scored the most out of 100 possible points received an artistically designed slate, which was conceived by Dow employee and artist AFD Ludwig (Horst Doll, Epoxy-Site). The company Thomas Kleinhans (gas- and water installation) scored a perfect 100 points. In all of 2005, the Dow testing team could not detect a single deviation in safety performances at this company and its employees. The companies Fischdick & Hemeier GmbH (pipeline construction & installation), Westermann GmbH & Co. KG (shipping and loading) as well as Konrad Braun GmbH (scaffolding) scored between 92 and 99 points and were also presented with a slate. Further fourteen companies were awarded a certificate for outstanding safety performances.
John Sampson was pleased "that the high level of safety and quality of our partner companies has further improved." Once more, he highlighted the "safety partnership" that strongly connects Dow and its contractor companies. Peter Schaub said, "The performance level at the top becomes increasingly competitive, so that small details now tip the scales when deciding about who will win the awards.”
Matthias Spors, safety expert in the Rhine Center, added that Dow’s sustainability goals regarding EH&S for 2015 will “demand even more ambitious standards from us.” This would entail taking aim at a reduction of the Rhine Center’s accident rate to only one reportable accident every other year. Of course, the ultimate goal is the avoidance of all accidents. In 2005, the Rhine Center had six of those reportable accidents. However, what had been remarkable this year was that for the first time since 1994, the partner companies had a lower accident rate than the Dow employees. Spors, “This shows that together, we are on a very good track.”

Am 30. Mai wurde im Werk Rheinmünster zum dritten Mal der „Sicherheitspreis (Safety Award) 2005“ für Fremdfirmen vergeben. In einer kleinen Feierstunde wurden die Preise von John Sampson, Site Leader Rhine Center, und Peter Schaub, Leiter Maintenance und Vorsitzender des SMAT) überreicht. SMAT steht für Supplier Management Action Team, und ist eine Arbeitsgruppe von Dow, die für die Zusammenarbeit mit den Fremdfirmen zuständig ist und die jährlichen Bewertungen für den Sicherheitspreis durchführt.
Vier Fremdfirmen, die die meisten der 100 möglichen Punkte erreichten, erhielten eine künstlerisch gestaltete Schiefertafel, die der Dow Mitarbeiter und Künstler AFD Ludwig ( Horst Doll, Epoxy-Anlage) gestaltet hat. 100 Punkte erreichte die Firma Thomas Kleinhans (Gas- und Wasserinstallation). Im ganzen Jahr 2005 hatte ein Prüfteam von Dow bei den Mitarbeitern dieser Firma keinerlei Abweichungen im Sicherheitsverhalten feststellen können. Zwischen 92 und 99 Punkte erzielten die ebenfalls ausgezeichneten Firmen Fischdick & Hemeier GmbH (Rohrleitungsbau & Montage), Westermann GmbH & Co. KG (Spedition und Verladetätigkeit) sowie die Konrad Braun GmbH (Gerüstbau). Weitere 14 Firmen wurden wegen ebenfalls hervorragender Sicherheitsleistungen mit einer Urkunde ausgezeichnet.
John Sampson freute sich darüber, „dass sich das hohe Sicherheits- und Qualitätsniveau unserer Partnerfirmen weiter verbessert hat.“ Er unterstrich erneut die „gemeinsame Sicherheitspartnerschaft“, die die Fremdfirmen und Dow verbinde. Peter Schaub sagte: „Das Leistungsniveau an der Spitze wird immer dichter, sodass bei der Entscheidung über die Preisträger mittlerweile Kleinigkeiten den Ausschlag geben.“
Matthias Spors, Sicherheitsfachkraft im Rhine Center, ergänzte, dass die Nachhaltigkeitsziele von Dow für 2015 in Sachen EH&S-Leistung „nochmals eine Größenordnung mehr von uns fordern werden.“ Im Rhine Center werde angestrebt, die Unfallrate soweit zu verringern, dass maximal alle zwei Jahre ein meldepflichtiger Unfall passiert. Wobei das ultimative Ziel natürlich die Vermeidung aller Unfälle ist. 2005 hatte das Rhine Center sechs dieser Personenunfälle. Bemerkenswert sei es, dass die Partnerfirmen 2005 erstmals seit 1994 eine geringere Unfallrate als die Dow Mitarbeiter hatten. Spors: „Das zeigt, dass wir gemeinsam auf einem sehr guten Weg sind.“
