The scintillating play of colour in a mother-of-pearl dial is irresistible: a prismatic, iridescent shimmer that can only be created by genuine mother-of-pearl. A natural substance formed on the inner surface of mollusc shells, mother-of-pearl has been a much-valued decorative material for thousands of years. Applied in whisper-thin platelets, it adds a touch of luxury to any dial. The platelets are extremely delicate and have to be handled with the utmost care. Dials made with mother-of-pearl are therefore extremely difficult to manufacture and turn any Montblanc watch into a veritable gem.
For its glasses and see-through back covers, Montblanc uses only high-quality sapphire, which is extremely scratch-resistant. However, manufacture and machining are possible only with diamond-tipped tools, which is expensive and time-consuming. A special coating makes the glass antireflective on both sides and reduces annoying glare to a minimum. The result is a highly transparent glass which is almost invisible and underscores the three-dimensional qualities of the dial.
In the familiar words of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, less is often more. In an increasingly complex world, we value qualities such as simplicity, personality and understatement. And the more complex our times become, the easier it should be to measure time. Which is why the classic three-hand watch lives on in the MONTBLANC STAR 4810 COLLECTION: it shows the hours, minutes and seconds, and has a large window for the date.

The hand-wound Montblanc Calibre MB R100 features a chronograph activated by a classic column wheel mechanism. But the feature that puts this movement at the cutting edge of watchmaking is a vertical disc clutch that runs virtually friction-free and does not affect the watch’s rate.
Conventional mechanical watches have a power reserve of about 45 hours. By contrast, the two new Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronographs are equipped with twin barrels that can store enough energy to keep the watch running for a full 72 hours. That’s long enough to take your watch off for the entire weekend without having to reset the time and date on Monday morning. To ensure that sufficient energy is stored in the barrels, the hand-wound Montblanc Calibre MB R100 even comes with a power reserve display. This is linked to the barrels through a tiny differential gear and can be seen at the rear of the movement through the sapphire crystal case back.
Platinum, white gold, red gold or yellow gold are the materials used for the cases of the exclusive Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronographs, which will be available only in strictly limited numbers: 25 watches in 950 platinum, 75 each in 18 K white and yellow gold, as well as 125 watches in 18 K red gold. In keeping with traditional watchmaking methods the precious metal cases, measuring an imposing 43 millimetres in diameter, are painstakingly cold-moulded in punches exerting several tons of pressure and then meticulously finished by hand.
The balance pivot are just a few tenths of a millimetre thick. To ensure they do not break despite the enormous stresses to which they are subjected in everyday use, they have to be well protected. This is achieved with a shock-absorption system featuring a sprung jewel bearing that cushions it against even hard impacts. According to the quality standards set by the Swiss watchmaking industry, a wristwatch must be able to withstand acceleration forces of up to 5,000 g with no effect on its rate. An outstanding achievement if you consider that when a rocket is launched, the astronauts are subjected to forces in the region of a “mere” 6 to 8 g.

Source text - English Crises in food, fuel and finance have triggered the most serious recession in generations and, against a backdrop of persistent poverty, widening wealth gaps, increasing ecological scarcity and the threat of significant climate change highlight our call for a deep, urgent and far-reaching global response.
• Global fiscal stimulus packages totaling around US$ 3.0 trillion are being proposed to stimulate the economy and restore jobs: but it is uncertain yet how much of this investment and spending will result in a sustainable post-recession economy.

• The Policy Brief recommends that a 'greening' stimulus be targeted to five sectors that offer ‘best return on investment’ immediately and medium-term from any perspective in respect to for example jobs, growth, combatting climate change and poverty alleviation.
• These five sectors are energy efficient buildings, sustainable transport, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and freshwater infrastructure—the latter two are especially relevant in developing countries.
• However, there is not a ‘level playing field’ for green growth: For example fossil fuel subsidies add up to well over US$ 200 billion per annum alongside US$ 250 billion per annum for agriculture and significant sums spent on fisheries subsidies: these are all impediments to a sustainable future and must be addressed—today’s subsidies must reflect tomorrow’s priorities.
• Together with 25 per cent of the stimulus packages being focused on five 'green' sectors, the Policy Brief argues for the urgent need to select policy reforms at the national level—smart subsidies, creative taxes, transformative legislation and more intelligent land-use to management of freshwaters.
• And at the international level trade, aid, carbon markets, ecosystem services markets, and technology transfer: such national and international action can catalyze the 'green shoots of recovery' to actually take hold and grow into competitive businesses.
• The risks of not doing the above are that we shall spend US$ 3.0 trillion reinstating an economic system which consumes capital, creates unacceptable climate threats, perpetuates extreme poverty, is inherently unstable and is unlikely to address the needs of 9 billion people in 2050.
Translation - Russian Продовольственный, топливный и финансовый кризисы привели к наиболее серьезной рецессии невиданного масштаба на фоне хронический нищеты, увеличивающейся пропасти между богатыми и бедными, усугубляющегося дефицита экологических продуктов и угрозы значительных климатических изменений, что делает таким актуальным наш призыв к срочным, крупномасштабным и далеко идущим ответным мерам глобального масштаба.
• Для стимулирования экономики и создания новых рабочих мест вместо потерянных предлагаются глобальные фискальные пакеты стимулирования, общей стоимостью около 3 триллионов долларов США: но пока непонятно, какая часть этих инвестиций и расходов придется на устойчивую экономику по окончании рецессии.
• В докладе дается рекомендация, чтобы 25 процентов этих денег в размере 750 млрд. долл. США, что составляет примерно 1 процент мирового ВВП, было инвестировано в «озеленение» мировой экономики, наряду со всесторонними реформами внутренней политики и ценообразования и совершенствованием структуры международной политики и рынков.
• В докладе предлагается нацелить «зеленое» стимулирование на пять секторов, которые обеспечивают «наилучшую окупаемость инвестиций» немедленно и в среднесрочной перспективе во всех отношениях, например, по отношению к рабочим местам, развитию, климатическим изменениям и борьбе с нищетой.
• К этим пяти секторам относятся энергоэффективные здания, устойчивый транспорт, источники возобновляемой энергии, устойчивое сельское хозяйство и инфраструктура обеспечения пресной водой — последние два имеют особое значение в развивающихся странах.
• Однако, в настоящее время для зеленого роста нет равных условий: К примеру, общая сумма ежегодных субсидий на ископаемое топливо переваливает за 200 млрд. долл. США, плюс 250 млрд. долл. США идут на субсидии в сельское хозяйство, к тому же большие средства тратятся для субсидирования рыбного хозяйства: это помехи на пути к стабильному будущему, и эту проблему необходимо решать — сегодняшние субсидии должны отражать завтрашние приоритеты.
• В докладе утверждается, что наряду с направлением 25 процентов стимулирующих пакетов в пять «зеленых» секторов, существует насущная необходимость в реформах политики на национальном уровне — это разумные субсидии, креативное налогообложение, гибкое законодательство, более рациональное земледелие и управление ресурсами пресной воды.
• На международном уровне это торговля, оказание помощи, рынки квот на выброс углеродов, рынки экосистемных услуг и передача технологий: такие действия на национальном и международном уровне смогут стимулировать рост «зеленых ростков оживления экономики», которые смогут затем вырасти в конкурентоспособную коммерческую деятельность.
• Если мы не сделаем того, что описано выше, то существует риск потратить 3 триллиона долларов США для восстановления экономической системы, которая поглощает капитал, создает неприемлемые климатические угрозы, увековечивает крайние формы нищеты, является нестабильной по своей природе и вряд ли сможет удовлетворить запросы и потребности 9 миллиардов людей в 2050 году.

My wife Nadia got MA degree in English Philology upon graduation from Chernovtsy State University (Ukraine). Consequently together we are able to handle effectively projects concerned with English <> Russian, Ukrainian translation.
