내년도 국내 인터넷 기반 동영상 서비스(OTT) 시장이 그 어느때보다 치열할 전망이다. 넷플릭스에 이어 아마존 비디오까지 한국에 상륙하며, 국내 OTT업계와 전면전을 벌일 것으로 보인다. 외산 OTT 업체들이 당장 성과를 내긴 어렵겠지만, 브랜드 파워와 자체 콘텐츠 제작 역량이 뛰어난 만큼 국내 업계들도 촉각을 곤두세우고 있다.
아마존은 지난 14일 한국을 포함해 전세계 60개국에 OTT 서비스 ‘아마존 프라임 비디오’를 출시했다. 아마존은 한국을 포함한 전세계 60개국에 아마존 비디오를 선 출시하고, 내년 200개국으로 확대한다.
아마존 비디오 서비스의 장점은 저렴한 가격이다. 국내 이용 가격은 5.99달러(한화 약 7000원)로 출시일부터 6개월간 2.99달러(한화 약 3000원)이다. 첫 이용 7일간은 무료이다. 넷플릭스가 9000원부터, 올레TV 등 인터넷 TV(IPTV) 3사 등의 서비스가 1만원 안팎인 걸 고려하면 파격적인 수준이다.
사용자 인터넷 환경에 맞춰서 다양한 옵션을 제공하는 다운로드 방식도 눈여겨볼 만하다. 모든 콘텐츠를 외장 메모리에도 저장할 수 있다. 넷플릭스의 경우 스마트폰이나 태블릿PC에서 이 같은 기능은 지원하지 않는다.
그러나 빈약한 콘텐츠와 10%대에 불과한 한국어 자막 등은 아쉬운 부분이다. TV와 드라마를 포함 아마존의 콘텐츠 개수는 300여 개 수준이다. 먼저 한국에 진출한 넷플릭스는 1500여 개로 5분의 1에 불과하다. 한국어 자막 또한 전체 콘텐츠의 14% 수준으로 알려졌다. 넷플릭스는 국내 서비스 시작 동시에 모든 콘텐츠에 한국어 자막을 제공한 바 있다.
아마존 서비스가 빈약한 측면이 있지만, 업계는 글로벌 브랜드 파워가 있는 만큼 경계를 늦추지 않고 있다. 아마존은 기존 프라임 가입자를 대상으로 월 9.99달러에 스트리밍 서비스를 제공해왔었는데, 이번 한국을 포함 비디오 서비스 가격을 월 5.99달러로 책정한 것은 시장 공략 의지가 표출됐다는 분석이다.
업계 관계자는 “한국 콘텐츠는 많지 않지만 미국 본토의 아마존 콘텐츠 개수는 넷플릭스와 비교가 안되는 수준”이라며 “가격을 낮추며 한국에도 비디오 서비스를 낸 것은 국내 OTT 시장의 가능성을 본 것”이라고 설명했다. 그는 이어 “한국인을 위한 장치는 다소 부족하긴 하나, 거대 글로벌 IT사업자가 국내에 진출했다는 데 의의가 있다”고 평했다.

Next year still would likely be the most intense more than any time for the domestic internet-based over-the-top(OTT) service market. Amazon Video has set its foot in S.Korea following Netflix, it seems there would be an all-out war with the domestic OTT industry. Overseas OTT companies may not be able to forge ahead instantly, however, their outstanding brand power and original content-making skills have put the domestic industry on alert.
On the 14th, Amazon launched their OTT service 'Amazon Prime Video' in 60 countries including South Korea. Amazon has pre-launched 'Amazon Video' in 60 countries including South Korea, expanding to 200 countries next year.
Amazon Video service has the advantage of affordable prices. Their service fee in S.Korea is $5.99(KRW 3,000), and up to 6 months from the launching date is $2.99(KRW 3,000). They provide a free trial for the first 7 days. Amazon sets their price quite a bargain while Netflix's service costs from KRW 9,000 and Olleh TV, Internet TV(IPTV) Trio, etc, offer their service for around KRW 10,000.
It is also notable that there are multiple download options per the user's internet environment. You can also save all the contents in external memory. Netflix doesn't support these functions for smartphones or tablet PCs.
What's missing is, however, a poor scale of contents and only 10% range of their pieces have Korean subtitles. They have only about 300 pieces of content including TV and drama on Amazon. Netflix which entered S.Korea earlier, has around 1,500 pieces of content, compared to them, Amazon has merely 1/5 of the quantity. They're also known for having only 14% of their content have Korean subtitles. Netflix had provided Korean subtitles for all content when they started the service in S.Korea.
Even though Amazon's service is quite deprived in some aspects, the industry is still keeping an eye on Amazon's global brand power. Though Amazon has been providing streaming service at $9.99 per month for their Prime customers so far, According to analysis, pricing their video service at $5.99 per month including in S.Korea has shown that they're keen to tap into the market.
An official said "Despite that, there is not much Amazon content in S.Korea, but in the States, the number of pieces of Amazon content has outnumbered what Netflix has." explained, "Launching video service in S.Korea with lower price is because they see their possibility in the domestic OTT market." also added, "There are little fall short for Koreans, but the fact that this massive global IT corporation stepping into S.Korea itself says a lot." He assessed.
