Many years ago, somewhere in Oshodi, in the heart of mainland Lagos Nigeria, little Kanayo was sent out of school because he hadn’t paid his tuition fees. Kanayo was not alone. Many other kids in his class were also sent home to compel their parents to pay their tuition fees. Ideally, one would expect these kids to be sad, but they were elated! As they walked out of the school gate, Kanayo and his friends would move straight to a gaming center two streets away from the school.
They would drop their school bags at a corner of the tiny room, pay the GameHouse operator with the money meant for their lunch, sit down in front of the small box TVs, and pick up the gamepads. These kids would spend the entire day playing Football, Mortal Kombat, Super Mario and Call of Duty until school closing time. Tomorrow, they’d repeat this again.
Many more years later, Kanayo has grown into a man and become successful in his own rights, but he still gets excited when someone gifts him a box of Playstation on his birthday. Kanayo is a born gamer, and there are millions of other gamers like him in Nigeria and entire Africa, who unfortunately cannot compete professionally because eSport is almost non-existent in most parts of Africa.

The term “GSL” shouldn’t strike a bell for most esports enthusiasts. But this tournament format actually appears in almost all esports, and to this very day, it is still one of the easiest means to conduct an exciting Group Stage. In this Fragster Fundamentals edition, we’ll be taking a look a the history of the GSL format!
Who still remembers the Global StarCraft II League? While this esport has somewhat been forgotten in the grand picture, the league used to be one of the biggest circuits on the planet. The tournament format used there got its name from GSL, as it was the first to utilize it. But what actually is the GSL format?
Four teams are put into one group. Two Opening Matches kick things off. Winners and losers will emerge from these matches. The winning sides will go on to the Winners’ Match and whoever succeeds there will advance to the playoffs. The losing sides from the Opening Matches enter the Losers’ Match (also called Elimination Match). Whoever fails there, is out of the tournament. To conclude things, there is one last match between the winning team from the Losers’ Match and the losing team from the Winners’ Match. This commonly referred to as Consolidation Match, Tiebreaker Match, or simply the Decider, as it decides on the second and last team to enter the playoffs from that group.

En esta entrega de Fundamentales Fragster estaremos revisitando la historia del formato GSL!
¿Quién todavía recuerda la Global Starcraft II League? Aunque este e-Sport ha de algún modo sido olvidado en los grandes escenarios del mundo competitivo, esta liga solía ser uno de los circuitos más grandes del planeta. El formato de campeonato usado allí tomó su nombre de GSL, y fue el primero en hacer uso del mismo. Pero, ¿qué es exactamente el formato GSL?
Cuatro equipos son puestos en un mismo grupo. Dos parejas de equipos dan comienzo a la competencia. Ganadores y perdedores surgirán de los resultados de los partidos sostenidos entre estas parejas. Las partes victoriosas serán asignadas al Grupo de Ganadores y quien sea que salga victorioso avanzará a los playoffs. Por otro lado, las partes perdedoras de las parejas originales serán asignadas al Grupo de Perdedores (también llamado Grupo de Eliminación). Quien sea que se encuentre en el puesto perdedor aquí, queda fuera del campeonato.
Finalmente, para concluir las cosas, se sostiene un último partido entre los ganadores del Grupo de Perdedores y el equipo derrotado en el enfrentamiento del Grupo de Ganadores. Source text - English Integrated graphics cards have gone a long way since the dreadful days of yore, so it’s worth posing the following question: are ultrabooks finally viable for esports gaming? We’re talking about a slew of (relatively) undermanding titles, games that are extremely well-optimized and have accumulated astoundingly large player bases.
League of Legends, Dota 2, Overwatch, Rocket League, Fortnite, PUBG, Apex Legends, and many others — all games that have captured our attention and are raking in obscene amounts of profit for their developers.
Some of them, like LoL, can run exceptionally well even on the most outdated hardware. Others, like Apex, for instance, are a lot more demanding. Fortunately, today’s most powerful iGPUs can definitely handle the aforementioned slew of esports titles and, in most cases, deliver a surprisingly enjoyable gaming experience.
So, let’s go over the current state of the market!
An Interesting Trend Towards Mobility
The first trend that immediately comes to mind is the one regarding overall mobility. Technology has advanced to such a degree that now, in 2021, we have 13″ laptops with incredibly powerful integrated graphics cards, 13″ laptops with dedicated GPUs like the GTX 1650, and even 14″ models — like the Razer Blade 14 and ASUS Zephyrus G14 — that have up to an RTX 3070 packed within their enclosures.
So, frankly, if it’s an ultrabook you want, you can just splurge for one of those and call it a day as they’ll chew through any triple A title you might throw their way with staggering ease.
The smaller, iGPU-equipped models present a much more interesting “challenge” when it comes to gaming, but they should not be underestimated either — despite their unassuming appearance. If you limit yourself solely to esports titles, then these ultrabooks will definitely suffice!
