Au mois de juin 1902, M. Antoine d'Hergemont, dont on apprécie les études sur les monuments mégalithiques de la Bretagne, se promenait au Bois avec sa fille Véronique, lorsqu'il fut assailli par quatre individus et frappé au visage d'un coup de canne qui l'abattit.
Après une courte lutte, et malgré ses efforts désespérés, Véronique, la belle Véronique comme on l'appelait parmi ses amies, était entraînée et jetée dans une automobile que les spectateurs de cette scène très rapide virent s'éloigner du côté de Saint-Cloud.
Simple enlèvement. Le lendemain, on savait la vérité. Le comte Alexis Vorski, jeune gentilhomme polonais, d'assez mauvaise réputation mais de grande allure, et qui se disait de sang royal, aimait Véronique d'Hergemont et Véronique l'aimait. Repoussé par le père, insulté même par lui à diverses reprises, il avait combiné l'aventure sans que Véronique, d'ailleurs, en fût le moins du monde complice.
