That’s what the divorce papers stated, in black ink and bold
text, stark against the white of the paper.
No-fault.
Lacey sighed as she looked down at the documents. The
innocuous-looking manila envelope had just been hand delivered
to her door by a pimple-faced teenager with a blasé attitude, as if
it were nothing more significant than a takeout pizza. And though
Lacey had immediately known the reason she was receiving a
couriered letter, she’d felt nothing in the moment. It was only after
she’d flopped onto the living room couch—where the cappuccino
she’d abandoned at the sound of the door buzzer was on the
coffee table still spewing little coils of steam—and slid the
documents from the envelope that it actually hit her.
Divorce papers.
Divorce.
Her reaction had been to scream and throw them to the ground,
like she was an arachnophobic who’d just been mailed a live
tarantula. And there they now lay, spread across the fashionable
and extremely expensive rug she’d been gifted by her boss, Saskia,
at the interior design firm where she worked. The words David
Bishop vs Lacey Bishop stared up at her. From the nonsensical mass
of letters, words began to form before her eyes: dissolution of
marriage, irreconcilable differences, no-fault...
She picked the papers up tentatively.
Of course, this wasn’t a surprise. David had ended their
fourteen-year marriage with the exclamation, ―You’ll be hearing
from my lawyer!‖ after all. But that still hadn’t prepared Lacey for
the emotional fallout of actually being in physical possession of the
documents. Of feeling their weight, their solidness, and seeing that
horrible, bold, black text declaring faultlessness.

w swoim salonie, gdzie czekało na nią porzucone na dźwięk
dzwonka cappuccino, nad którym wciąż unosiły się małe kłębki
pary. I dopiero kiedy wyciągnęła dokumenty z koperty, zaczęło to
do niej docierać.
Papiery rozwodowe.
Rozwód.
Nagle krzyknęła i upuściła dokumenty na ziemię, jakby była
arachnofobem, któremu ktoś właśnie przysłał żywą tarantulę. Teraz
leżały w nieładzie na modnym i niezwykle drogim dywanie, który
podarowała jej Saskia, jej szefowa w firmie projektującej wnętrza.
Słowa "David Bishop kontra Lacey Bishop" zdawały się rzucać jej
wyzwanie. Z masy przypadkowych liter zaczęło wyłaniać się ich
znaczenie: rozwiązanie małżeństwa, różnice nie do pogodzenia,
bez orzekania o winie...
Z wahaniem zaczęła podnosić kartki.
Oczywiście, nie była zaskoczona. W końcu David zakończył
ich czternastoletnie małżeństwo głośnym: „Mój prawnik się z tobą
skontaktuje!‖. Jednak nie przygotowało to jej na emocje, które
uderzyły ją wraz z fizycznym pojawieniem się dokumentów. Ich
waga, ich namacalność, i ten straszny tekst, orzekający brak winy,
czarno na białym.

Source text - English Dr. Janice Lemmon’s office was only a few blocks from the
apartment building Jessie was leaving and she was glad for the
chance to walk and clear her head. As she walked down
Figueroa, she almost welcomed the sharp, cutting wind making her
eyes water and immediately dry up. The bracing cold pushed most
thoughts other than moving fast from her head.
She zipped her coat up to the neck and put her head down
as she passed a coffee shop, then a diner filled to near
overflowing. It was mid-December in Los Angeles and local
businesses were doing their best to make their storefronts look
holiday festive in a town where snow was almost an abstract
concept.
But in the wind tunnels created by downtown skyscrapers,
cold was ever-present. It was almost 11 a.m. but the sky was gray
and the temperature was in the low fifties. Tonight it would drop
close to forty. For L.A., that was bone-chilling. Of course, Jessie had
been through far more frigid weather.
As a child in rural Missouri, before everything fell apart, she
would play in the tiny front yard of her mom’s mobile home in the
trailer park, her fingers and face half-numb, fashioning
unimpressive but happy-faced snowmen while her mom watched
protectively from the window. Jessie remembered wondering why
her mother never took her eyes off her. Looking back now, it was
clear.
A few years later, in the suburbs of Las Cruces, New Mexico,
where she’d lived with her adoptive family after going into Witness
Protection, she would go skiing on the bunny slopes of the nearby
mountains with her second father, an FBI agent who projected
calm professionalism, no matter the situation. He was always there
to help her up when she fell. And she could usually count on a hot
chocolate when they got off the barren, windswept hills and went
back to the lodge.
