Source text - Spanish Una tarde naranja, Julia Corzas le abrió la
puerta a su tercer marido. El hombre era un
espécimen de manos rotundas y ojos vivísimos que
alguna vez se creyó amado por los dioses. Aún
traía en los hombros el encanto de un gitano y en
los pies el andar de un guerrero. Tenía el pelo
castaño en otros tiempos, pero cuando ella lo vio
detenido en el umbral de su casa la luz que
iluminaba su frente se entretuvo en las canas
suavizando el gesto con que la saludó sin abrir la
boca.
—Mira que seguir siendo guapo —dijo como
si hablara consigo misma.
Cuando lo conoció, Julia Corzas era pálida
como un canario, inconsciente como un gorrión,
necia como un pájaro carpintero, concentrada
como lechuza, incansable como si fuera un colibrí.
Tan distintas alas en la misma mujer daban una
criatura atractiva y volátil, empeñada en decir que
sólo ambicionaba estarse quieta. Desde entonces él
se metía en su cama entre un marido y otro.
Llevaban años de no verse. Él se había ido
hacía nueve, cuando Julia rondaba la edad media,
leía un libro triste y era la mujer más alegre que
podía existir bajo cualquier puesta de sol.
Sacaron el tablero de ajedrez. Abajo estaba el
lago adormeciéndose. Julia Corzas sonrió
enseñando su hilera de pequeños dientes. Había
pocos paisajes tan perfectos como la sonrisa de
Julia con los montes detrás, los ojos de Julia
mirando al agua con la punta de ironía que no
perdieron nunca, la cabeza de Julia que él sabía
oyendo a toda hora la música de fondo de su propia
invención.
—¿Dónde anduviste? —le preguntó.
Él buscó en la bolsa de su pantalón una
moneda de veinte centavos que corría en México a
mediados del siglo pasado. La usaban para jugar el
águila o sol con que dirimían el derecho a mover la
primera pieza del tablero. La tiró al aire.
—¡Sol! —pidió Julia Corzas casi al mismo
tiempo en que él atrapaba el círculo de cobre entre
una mano y otra.
—¡Águila! —dijo él enseñando la cara de la
moneda que tiene de un lado el escudo nacional,
con su águila comiendo una serpiente y del otro
una pirámide iluminada por un gorro frigio.
Se acomodó frente a ella.
—¿Y qué es de tu marido? —
preguntó.
—Mi marido se fue con la mujer de otro
marido.
—Por fin —dijo él.
—Ni creas que vas a meterte en mi cama.
—No me he salido nunca —dijo él.
Julia necesitó un aguardiente. Él quiso otro.
—¿Hay chocolates? —preguntó.
—Eres el único hombre al que le gustan los
chocolates.
—¿Por qué se fue tu marido?
—¿Por qué se van los maridos? ¿Por qué te
fuiste tú?
—Yo aquí ando —contestó él.
—Ahora —dijo Julia Corzas y pasó un ángel
con su caudal de silencio.
Translation - Portuguese Em um fim de tarde alaranjado, Julia Corzas abriu a porta para o seu terceiro marido. O homem era um indivíduo de mãos gordas e vivíssimos olhos, que um dia acreditou ser amado pelos deuses. Ainda trazia em seus ombros o encanto de um cigano e nos pés o andar de um guerreiro. Tempos atrás, seu cabelo era castanho, mas quando ela o viu parado na soleira da porta de sua casa, a luz que iluminava seu rosto se entreteve nos cabelos brancos, suavizando o gesto com que ele a cumprimentou sem abrir a boca.
— Ele continua lindo — disse ela como se falasse consigo mesma.
Quando o conheceu, Julia Corzas era pálida como um canário, inconsciente como um pardal, tola como um pássaro carpinteiro, concentrada como uma coruja, incansável como se fosse um beija-flor. Asas tão diferentes na mesma mulher faziam dela uma criatura atrativa e volátil, empenhada em dizer que só queria mesmo ficar quieta. Desde então ele se enfiava em sua cama entre um marido e outro.
Fazia anos que eles não se viam. Ele havia ido embora há nove anos, quando Julia beirava seus quarenta e poucos, lia um livro triste e era a mulher mais alegre que poderia haver nesse mundo.
Pegaram o tabuleiro de xadrez. Logo abaixo estava o lago adormecendo. Julia Corzas sorriu, mostrando seus pequenos dentes enfileirados. Havia poucas paisagens tão perfeitas como o sorriso de Julia com os montes atrás dela, seus olhos olhando a água com uma pitada de ironia nunca perdida, ouvindo toda hora em sua cabeça uma música de fundo de sua própria invenção.
— Por onde você andou? — lhe perguntou.
Ele pegou no bolso de sua calça uma moeda de vinte centavos que circulava no México em meados do século passado. Eles a usavam para jogar o cara ou coroa e decidir quem seria o primeiro a mover a peça no tabuleiro. A jogou para o ar.
— Cara! — pediu Julia quase ao mesmo tempo em que ele pegava o círculo de cobre entre uma mão e outra.
— Coroa! — disse ele mostrando a cara da moeda, que de um lado tem o escudo nacional, com sua águia comendo uma serpente e, do outro, uma pirâmide iluminada por uma carapuça.
Se acomodou de frente para ela.
— E o seu marido? — perguntou ele.
— Meu marido foi embora com a mulher de outro marido.
— Até que enfim — disse ele.
— Nem pense que você vai se enfiar na minha cama.
— Eu nunca saí — disse ele.
Julia precisou de uma bebida. Ele quis outra.
— Tem chocolate? — ele perguntou.
— Você é o único homem que gosta de chocolate.
— Porque seu marido foi embora?
— Por que os maridos vão embora? Por que você foi embora?
— Eu estou aqui — respondeu ele.
— Agora — disse Julia Corzas e passou um anjo passou com seu impetuoso silêncio.
