Da quel remoto giorno, l’uomo è stato capace di distinguersi in quanto si pone continuamente delle domande cercandone, poi, strenuamente la risposta, ecco forse il nocciolo della nostra evoluzione.
In questo particolare anno in cui ricorre il centocinquantenario dall’Unità d’Italia, conviene ricordare quanto cultura e scienza siano fondamentali nel progresso umano verso il perfezionamento di sé e della società.

Source text - Italian Nell’estate del ’68 sono andato per la prima volta a Londra con una Nikon F e una manciata di pellicole. E’ stato come un rito di iniziazione alla fotografia, il mio primo reportage all’estero. Avevo 22 anni e una fortissima attrazione per la capitale inglese e per i suoi miti inossidabili: la musica, la moda, le manifestazioni nonviolente, la stessa fotografia (basti pensare al film di Antonioni, Blow-Up). Ci sono poi tornato quattro anni dopo, con la consapevolezza che quella della fotografia era diventata davvero la mia professione.

It was my first reportage from abroad: it felt like some sort of initiation ritual into photography.

Source text - English Every time the same object moved from one language into another, a transformation occurred. It made me realize that your mother tongue comes to you without any effort on your part. It is a dowry that comes into your possession without you noticing. It is then judged by another language that has been added later and that comes from somewhere else. Your mother tongue feels as direct and unconditional as your own skin, and it is just as vulnerable if held in low esteem, treated with contempt, or even banned by others. Having grown up in a village speaking a dialect and learning standard German at high school, I found it difficult to find my bearings in the official Romanian spoken in the capital. For the first two years in the city it was easier for me to locate the right street in an unfamiliar part of town than the right word in the national language. Romanian was like pocket money. No sooner would I be tempted by something in a shop window than I would discover I was short of the money needed to buy it. There were so many words I did not know, and those that I did would not come as quickly as they were needed. Today, however, I know that this kind of inching along in another language, the hesitancy that forced me below my intellectual level, also gave me time to marvel at how objects were transformed by the Romanian language. I know that I am fortunate to have experienced this. A swallow suddenly appeared in a different light in Romanian, where it is called rindunica, "sitting-in-a-row". The bird's name suggests how swallows perch on a wire, close together in a row. I used to see them in my village every summer, before I knew the Romanian word. I was amazed that a swallow could have such a lovely name. I became more and more aware that the Romanian language had words that were more sensuous, more in tune with my perception, than my mother tongue. I would not now want to live without this string of transformations, in speech or in writing. There is not a single Romanian sentence in any of my books. But Romanian is always with me when I write because it has grown into my way of seeing the world.
Translation - Italian Ogni volta che uno stesso oggetto si spostava da una lingua all’altra, avveniva una trasformazione. Compresi che la lingua madre giunge a te senza alcuno sforzo da parte tua. È una dote che ti appartiene senza che tu te ne accorga. Viene poi giudicata da un’altra lingua che si aggiunge in un momento successivo e che viene da un posto diverso. Senti che la tua madre lingua è naturale e autentica come la tua pelle, ed è altrettanto vulnerabile se gli altri la sottostimano, la trattano con sufficienza o addirittura la proibiscono. Essendo cresciuta in un villaggio parlando il dialetto e avendo imparato il tedesco ufficiale a scuola, ebbi difficoltà ad orientarmi con il rumeno ufficiale che veniva parlato nella capitale. Nei primi due anni nella capitale mi riusciva più facile localizzare la strada giusta in una zona sconosciuta della città che trovare la parola giusta nella lingua nazionale. Il rumeno era come gli spiccioli in tasca. Non facevo in tempo ad essere tentata da qualcosa nella vetrina di un negozio, che scoprivo di non avere abbastanza soldi per comprarla. C’erano così tante parole che non conoscevo e quelle che conoscevo non mi venivano abbastanza velocemente. Oggi tuttavia so che quell’inseguire passo passo un’altra lingua, quell’esitazione che mi riportava ad un livello intellettuale inferiore al mio, mi dettero anche il tempo di stupirmi di fronte alla trasformazione che gli oggetti subivano ad opera della lingua rumena. Sono fortunata ad aver vissuto quest’esperienza. Una rondine improvvisamente appariva in una luce diversa in rumeno, poiché viene chiamata rindunica, “che siede in fila”. Il nome dell’uccello suggerisce come le rondini si appollaino sui fili, tutte vicine a creare una fila strettissima. Le vedevo da piccola nel mio villaggio ogni estate, prima che imparassi la parola rumena. Ero incantata dal fatto che la rondine potesse avere un nome così bello. Divenni sempre più consapevole del fatto che la lingua rumena aveva moltissime parole che suonavano più sensuali, più in linea con la mia percezione, rispetto alla mia lingua madre. Adesso non vorrei mai vivere senza questo filo conduttore di trasformazioni, sia nello scritto che nel parlato. Non c’è una singola frase in rumeno in nessuno dei mie libri, ma il rumeno è sempre con me quando scrivo perché è diventato parte del mio modo di vedere il mondo.
