Bio

I have just over 10 years experience as a translator in the general medical field, advertising, tourism, fiction, marketing and more.

I hold an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in translation studies and Bachelor of Arts degree in languages and literature with specialisation in language and culture for international tourism, both completed through Unisa.  My other qualification is a National Diploma in Travel and Tourism, through Technikon Pretoria (now known as the Tshwane University of Technology).

My language combinations are German into English, German into Afrikaans, Afrikaans into English and English into Afrikaans.

My maiden surname is Wandrag and I grew up in an Afrikaans household and went to Afrikaans schools.  I am totally bilingual in Afrikaans and English. As a general rule in the translation industry, one should translate into your mother tongue or first language and or language of habitual use, also as per my Honours degree in translation studies. German was my major subject at university and my language combination for my Honours degree was from German into English.

One can gain experience without being in an industry when translating. It is not a prerequisite but obviously an advantage.

For some info regarding sworn and ordinary translation:  this is also a specialised translation field different from ordinary translation which does not need to be sworn, it is normally official documents that need to be done by sworn translators, I am not a sworn translator.

In professional terms interpretation is the oral form of translation and translation is the written translation, I provide translation services. Professionals with the theoretical and practical training, know the difference and the proper terms in the industry. As per my Principles of interpreting module done at Unisa, one of my first modules, it is clearly stated that most people who are translators are not necessarily interpreters and the other way around, or some do both.

Over the years I have built up a good client base mostly working with translation companies, but I am also willing to work with individuals. I'm looking forward to working with you.
