One of the most arresting images of the twentieth century is a photo of Earthrise, taken in 1968 by a human traveler in orbit around the Moon. We have long known how precious and special our world is: Earth is the only known planet with oceans of water, with an at- mosphere rich in oxygen, with life. Nevertheless, many of us were unprepared for the breathtakingly stark contrast between the utterly hostile lunar landscape, the lifeless black void of space, and our entic- ing marbled white-on-blue home. From that distant vantage point, Earth appears alone, small, and vulnerable but also more beautiful by far than any other object in the heavens.
We are justifiably captivated by our home world. More than two centuries before the birth of Christ, the polymath Greek philosopher Eratosthenes of Cyrene conducted the earliest documented experi- ment on Earth. He based his ingenious measurement of Earth’s circumference on the simple observation of shadows. In the town of Syene, Egypt, at noon on the summer solstice, he observed the Sun directly overhead. A vertical post cast no shadow. By contrast, on the same day at the same time in the coastal city of Alexandria, some 490 miles to the north, a similar vertical post cast a slight shadow, thus revealing that the Sun was not quite directly overhead in that location. Eratosthenes employed the geometrical theorems of his Greek predecessor Euclid to conclude that Earth must be a sphere, and he calculated that it must have a circumference of about 25,000 miles—remarkably close to the modern established value of 24,902 miles around the Equator.
Throughout the centuries, thousands of other scholars, a few with names revered but most lost to history, have probed and pondered our planetary home. They have asked how Earth was formed, how it moves through the heavens, what it’s made of, and how it works. And most of all, these men and women of science have wondered how our dynamic planet evolved, how it became a living world. Today, because of our remarkable and cumulative knowledge, and because of the wonders of human technology, we know more about Earth than ancient philosophers could have fathomed. Of course we don’t know everything, but our understanding is rich and deep.
And while our knowledge of Earth has increased since the dawn of humankind, refined over the millennia into a fixed understanding, much of that progress has revealed that the study of Earth is the study of change.

Jednou z nejpoutavějších fotografií dvacátého století je snímek východu Země pořízený v roce 1968 kosmonautem na oběžné dráze kolem Měsíce. Již dávno víme, jak zvláštní a výjimečný náš svět je: Země je jediná známá planeta s oceány, atmosférou bohatou na kyslík a životem. Přesto ale většina z nás nebyla připravena na absolutní kontrast mezi nehostinným měsíčním povrchem, pustou prázdnotou vesmíru a naším vábivým modrobílým domovem. Z onoho vzdáleného bodu se Země jeví osamělou, malou a zranitelnou, ale také nádhernější než kterýkoliv jiný objekt na nebeské klenbě.
Náš domovský svět nás uchvacuje zcela oprávněně. Více než dvě století před narozením Krista provedl řecký polyhistor a filozof Eratosthenés z Kyrény nejstarší zdokumentované měření obvodu Země. Své důmyslné měření založil na prostém pozorování stínů. V egyptském městě Syene pozoroval v pravé poledne o letním slunovratu Slunce nad svou hlavu. Kolmo vztyčená hůl nevrhala žádný stín. Oproti tomu v pobřežním městě Alexandrii, přibližně o 789 km dále na sever, v týž den a okamžik již hůl stín vrhala. To prokázalo, že na onom místě pozorovatel Slunce přímo nad hlavou nemá. Eratosthenés využil geometrické teorémy svého řeckého předchůdce Euklida, usoudil, že Země musí být kulatá, a spočetl obvod na přibližně 40 234 km. Toto číslo se pozoruhodně blíží moderními metodami stanovenému rovníkovému obvodu 40 075 km.
V průběhu následujících staletí se naší domovskou planetou zabývaly tisíce dalších učenců a badatelů. Některá ze jmen si historie zapamatovala, na většinu ostatních již zapomněla. Přemýšleli nad tím, jak Země vznikla, jak se pohybuje po své dráze, z čeho je utvořena a jak to všechno vlastně funguje. A především se muži i ženy vědy zajímali o to, jak se naše proměnlivá planeta vyvíjela a jak se stala živým světem. Dnes díky úctyhodnému, stále rostoucímu poznání a zázračným technologiím víme o Zemi více, než si starověcí filozofové vůbec dokázali představit. Samozřejmě, nevíme dosud vše, ale naše znalosti jsou široké a bohaté.
A jak se naše znalosti od úsvitu lidstva rozvíjely, aby v průběhu tisíciletí vykrystalizovaly do konkrétního pochopení, stále jasněji se ukazovalo jedno: studovat Zemi znamená studovat změny.

SHANGHAI, CHINA, 2003
IN retrospect, he would find it an astonishing way to start a war.
But then again, he didn’t start this war.
The meeting, and the information it had subsequently revealed, came to him purely by chance. Synchronicity, the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung had called it. A confluence of seemingly unrelated events that have meaning—albeit hidden to all but the most discerning. It was a sophisticated concept, especially for a Western mind, Kuan-Yin Zhao thought.
Of course, there were corollaries in his own life. Xiangqi, one of his passions, was an exercise in manipulated synchronicity. At its heart, the mastery of Xiangqi, and its lesser cousin, chess, was nothing more than recognizing the patterns your opponent was trying to hide, and creating patterns your opponent will fail to see until too late. Great Xiangqi players never move a single piece. On the board, it may be a pao moving five squares, but in the mind of a master, it is the pao’s move, combined with the myriad moves available to his opponent, combined with a countermove, and so on until victory or defeat.
Though pleased that Xiangqi might inspire a solution to his dilemma, he was also unsurprised. All he’d needed was the hint of an opening move, and now he had it. From there his mind would expand across the board—or in this case, across nations.
IF not for an underling’s father who had left China thirty years earlier to find greener pastures, he would have never found the linchpin of his plan. Like the rest of the world, he’d believed the public stories, but of course public stories were usually generated by governments, and governments weren’t known for their forthrightness—especially the Russians, whose natural gift for deception was second only to that of Beijing’s politicians.
A coal mine in Evenki collapses, killing hundreds, and the world knows nothing about it; a Russian submarine sinks to the bottom of the Kara Sea with all hands, and it simply ceases to exist; a Russian death squad sneaks onto Chinese soil, breaks into a man’s home, and murders him in front of his children and it’s called war.
Why would this secret be any different? All the better, Zhao thought.
What better way to begin the greatest game of his life than with a move no one would ever see?

Zpětně vzato, mohl to být úžasný způsob jak začít válku.
Jenže on tu válku nezačal.
K setkání došlo čirou náhodou a náhodou získal i ty informace. Švýcarský psychiatr Carl Jung takový jev označil jako synchronicitu. Sbíhání zdánlivě spolu nijak nesouvisejících událostí, které dává smysl… utajený všem, vyjma těch nejbystřejších. Kuan-jin Čao to pokládal za sofistikovaný koncept, na způsob myšlení obyvatele Západu určitě.
Samozřejmě, projevilo se to i v jeho životě. Siang-čchi, jedna z jeho vášní, byly cvičením v manipulaci a synchronicitě. Ve své podstatě nepředstavuje mistrovské ovládnutí siang-čchi, a jejich méně komplikovaného příbuzného, šachů, nic jiného než schopnost rozpoznat záměry, které se protivník snaží skrýt, a vytvořit vlastní plány, které protivník neodhalí, dokud nebude příliš pozdě. Velcí hráči siang-čchi nikdy nepohnou jedinou figurou. Na šachovnici může figura urazit pět polí, ale v mysli mistra se odehraje tah následovaný myriádou možných protitahů soupeře, poté další tah a tak dál až do úplného konce – vítězného, či ne.
I když bylo potěšující, že siang-čchi mohou inspirovat k řešení dilematu, překvapen tím nebyl. Vše, co potřeboval znát, byl zahajovací tah. Nyní jej konečně znal. Od této chvíle už mohl postupovat napříč celou šachovnicí – nebo, v tomto případě, napříč celými národy.
Nebýt otce jednoho z jeho podřízených, který před třiceti lety opustil Čínu, aby si našel lepší živobytí, nikdy by na základní kámen svého plánu nepřišel. Věřil by, podobně jako zbytek světa, oficiálním informacím – jenže oficiální informace většinou sdělují vlády a vlády nejsou zrovna vrcholem upřímnosti… zejména ne Rusové, jejichž přirozený talent pro podvod a klam jen o málo zaostává za nadáním pekingských politiků.
V Evenki dojde k sesuvu v uhelném dole, pohřbí to stovky lidí a svět se nic nedozví; ruská ponorka klesne ke dnu Karského moře i s kompletní posádkou na palubě a prostě přestane existovat; ruské popravčí komando pronikne na čínské území, vloupá se do domu, zavraždí někoho před zraky jeho dětí a říká se tomu válka.
Proč by tohle tajemství mělo být něčím jiným? Naopak, pomyslel si Čao.
Jak lépe začít největší hru svého života než tahem, který nikdy nikdo neviděl?
