We are seeing terrible images Apr 28, 2015

We have been twice in Nepal and we fell in love with your country. In TV we saw a drone flying over Kathmandu and there is distruction everywhere. You are living a really terrible situation and our heart is with you. Are the people in the not easily accessible villages getting help?
Is some international help coming?
Please keep us informed if you can.

The affected areas are so inaccessible that it is heard that no relief teams have reached there. Add to this, the telephone networks are not fully operatives, causing the rescue operations to be directionless. Now that the rain is pouring down, creating further difficulties.

We have heard of the international help coming. But we are not sure if it is being mobilized efficiently.

The most harrowing aspect is the death toll is expected to exceed 10000 (even PM admits it).

I saw this morning on the BBC news. If I remember correctly, they said 30 tons of tents and other supplies are to be flown in.

Very sad, what happened in Nepal Apr 29, 2015

The earthquake was expected. The last one took place about 80 years ago. The whole region is seismic - the Himalayas are one of the youngest mountains on the planet, which means they are still rising and Nepal is smack on the Himalayas.

Fortunately, the casualties are not that high for a 7.8 richter scale earthquake on a mountainous terrain. But we don't know the real situation in the interior villages yet. The Nepal PM has been quoted saying that the casualty figures may cross 10,

The Nepal PM has been quoted saying that the casualty figures may cross 10,000. Kathmandu itself seems to have been spared, by a quirk of geology. It would have been an even greater tragedy if Kathmandu had been hit badly. Many historical monuments too seem to have been affected. The Pashupatinath temple, luckily, through grace of god, no doubt, has suffered no damage.

These things happen, the Earth is quixotic. I have been through a major earthquake myself - the one that hit Gujarat in 2001 on 26 January, our Republic day. I was in Ahmedabad at that time, one of the cities that was badly hit. The epicentre was in Bhuj. I lost two office collegues in that earthquake - in one tragic case, the entire family that had gone to visit Bhuj on that fateful day was wiped out. But curiously, the nearby city of Baroda was spared. According geologists, this was because Ahmedabad is situated on an alluvial plain, while Baroda rests on a rocky terrain.

This particular earthquake in Nepal was felt all over northern India, too. My mother who is currently in Delhi felt the tremors in her home.

A team of my relatives had been on a visit to Kathmandu just when the earthquake happened. Mercifully they are ok, but have still not been able to return to India. They said that the hotel in Kathmandu that they had just vacated hours ago, collapsed.

The Indian army and many others are doing yeoman service to help the affected, but a lot more will be required before things get back to normal.

Aid from the UK Apr 29, 2015

BBC lunchtime news here in England said that £14 million has been collected in the UK by the Disasters Emergency Committee and that the Government has added another £5 million to this.

A team of 30 specialists is on its way to Nepal with equipment that includes some for unloading aircraft more quickly, to speed up operations at Kathmandu airport.

Let's hope that the international aid effort is coordinated properly and that some lives can still be saved.
