Does anyone know if Trados SDL 2011 is compatible with SDL 2009? I.e. if I can translate packages made in 2009 in 2011 ...

..if I can translate packages made in 2009 in 2011

This is what the Release Notes have to say about this:

SDL Trados Studio 2011 can run alongside SDL Trados Studio 2009. 2009 formats such as projects automatically get converted to 2011 when opening them for the first time in Studio 2011. You can send translation packages back and forth between 2009 and 2011.

If you are creating or working on Studio 2009 packages that include INX, Java properties, PDF or OpenOffice files in Studio 2011 or upgrading them to 2011, you can work on these and return them. However, you cannot save as target or preview such files as Studio 2011 uses later versions of these file types that are not backward compatible for previewing or saving as target.

We recommend that you keep both Studio 2009 and Studio 2011 side-by-side so that you can flexibly plug into the different supply chains as required and that you finish ongoing projects in the version in which they were created. This means it is better to finish running projects in Studio 2009 before switching to Studio 2011.

Hello
I am from SDL

it is also worth pointing out that TM and bilingual files are compatible from one version to the other.

One thing to watch out is 2011 files with Tracked changes which should be accepted or rejected before sending the file to a 2009 user.

Regards
Massi

I would like to ask if Trados 2011 packages have full backwards compatibility with Trados 2009.

So to say, if someone send a Trados 2011 package to revise, the owner of a Trados 2009 will be able to open the Trados 2011 package to read the files to be revised? Thanks in advance for any information.

In Studio 2011 there is an option to "create Studio 2009 project package" so that Studio 2009 users can open it.
Note that creating project packages is only available in the professional version of Studio.

Emma
