Do translation agencies write the name of the translator on a translated book or do they write their name and ignore the poor dude?

In my case yes Nov 21, 2010

My name is mentioned in each book I have translated. Only one was managed by an agengy (the publisher had outsourced the project management to them in a multilingual project), and my name was mentioned as well. But in this case I never received a complimentary copy.

credit where credit is due Nov 22, 2010

I think it is important that you establish this with the agency from the start.

In the case of a book, your work should be properly attributed. About fifteen years ago I translated a very difficult and rather wonderful book by an architect for a Brussels agency which has since disappeared off the scene. In this case the agency, which did not even edit or change my translation one iota, credited itself as translator in the publication. I learnt from this experience, and it has not happened again.

What I usually do... Nov 22, 2010

Is write "Translated by Phil Goddard" underneath the author's name right at the beginning, or in the publisher's credits if there are any. If it's through an agency, I put "Phil Goddard in association with XXX". I've done lots of books, no one ever deletes it, and it makes sure I never go uncredited.
