Hi Adam,
It would help me a lot if you could describe the problem you're having a little better. Did you click "Preview" and get to the preview step? Was there an error message?
Best,

There was neither a "preview quote" button nor any other at the bottom of the file that I wanted to send off. And no error messages either. Anyway, I used the old form and could deliver my bid without any problems.
For another job offer that I was interested in today there were no problems at all, all the buttons where one would expect them, and the problem seems solved and not possible to be recreated.
Thanks for asking back anyhow.

Please improve your system of job notifications sent to translators.
Ask the advertisers to provide precise budget information.
For example, I do not want to receive notifications about jobs where the rate offered is less than USD0.06/source word.
Or saying it in other words: I don't want to receive spam.
Thank you! | | | Setting job notifications preferences | Aug 22, 2010 |

However, a short while ago, there was a job posted which I was interested in and hurriedly tried to submit a quote since it was only showing 3 and 4 quotes submitted in my language pairs. When I clicked on "Preview Quote" the green bar at the bottom of the window that shows progress moved extremely slowly, then when it reached the end, it never opened the window allowing me to actually submit my quote. I tried again and had the same problem. By this time, the posting of interest was now showing 12 and 19 quotes received. Too late. Lost my opportunity.
Speed is essential when quoting for jobs, especially English/Spanish. In less than 5 minutes, more than a dozen quotes are submitted on one job. Experience has shown that responses are received when my quote was among the first 4 or 5 posted.
I hope this doesn't happen frequently. It's hard enough as it is to get jobs.

Hi Idalia,
Thanks for posting. I'm sorry to learn of your troubles responding to a job posting. I just took a look at the logs and it looks like the quote pages were generated for you in about .3 seconds every time. Were you uploading a large file with your quote? Perhaps your internet connection cut out?

Colin,
The window for quoting did come up immediately. The problems was when I finished the form and clicked on "review quote." The resume I uploaded is not big at all. I also attached/uploaded a 4-page pdf of excerpts of samples of my work. That may have been too heavy. I know I have sent this document with previous quotes, but they may have been where the outsourcer requested quotes be sent via email and not the quoting tool.
Next time I'll try using the form, but not attaching the samples. (I'll let the outsourcer know they can be requested or seen in my proz.com profile.)
Thank you for your quick response.
Idalia | | | Job posting template | Aug 25, 2010 |
Now I am very happy with the new Proz.com job posting system regarding the template. It is quite convenient to save time for quoting a job posting. But the template name can be duplicated and it is rather confusing to normal users. Don't you think so? Again, CV attachment had better be selectable (not attachment in bulk if my Proz.com CV files are in many languages): a few agencies need to read many CV files.
Best regards,

ProZ decides how many subjects you are capable of tackling and then, when a job comes up in your language combination that is not in the limited range of specialisms that you are allowed to enter on your profile, it sends you the job notification but denies you the right to bid for the job! How silly is that!
ProZ uses an automated system and I don't think that ProZ is qualified or entitled to decide whether or not I am qualified to bid on a job. If I had not known my own limitations I would not have been in this business for so long. Please stop this ridiculous system as soon as possible. You are the only job board that implements it and it does you no credit. ▲ Collapse | | | ProZ.com is a venue | Aug 30, 2010 |

Please note that job posters are the ones that chose to restrict who can submit quotes for their jobs based on certain criteria from users' profiles. ProZ.com is just a venue and, as a venue, it provides language professionals like you with the tools to market themselves and gives outsourcers several options to target their jobs better.
While it is true that the number of specialty, working and interest fields is limited in profiles, it is also true that even if you can work in a wide range of languages and fields, at ProZ.com you should target only a narrow and carefully chosen area of expertise.
This specialization model makes it possible for those with expertise to stand out from the crowd. Many people market themselves simply as good all-around translators. But this may not be as effective as presenting your unique specialties, because you cause yourself to blend back into the crowd.
Moreover, note that the main channel to get jobs in ProZ.com are direct searches in the directories. Hence, one of the best strategies to get jobs in the site is precisely "to specialize" (other strategies include a good profile, membership, KudoZ PRO points in top language pairs and fields of expertise and joining the Certified PRO Network) since clients always search for translators whose skills match perfectly the job they have in hand.
Hope this explains.
Have a great week start!
