Spanish term

jazán

Spanish to English Art/Literary Music
Daniel Fischman (cantante litúrgico, jazán)

To my understanding it is a singer of Sephardic song (I think), does anyone know a translation/definition for this word?

Discussion

Sandra Holt Sep 29, 2008:
This description in Spanish may help you: El jazán es el oficiante ritual profesional.
Sandra Holt Sep 29, 2008:
Hi Wil, I agree with desertfox in that it has nothing to do with the district of Jazán but I think that "Jazan" is correct, take a look at the link that I added to jsalas's answer.

Cantor

In Hebrew it's written חזן . It's not typical only to Sehpardic Jews.
it exists also among Askenzi Jews, and any other Jewish community.

Sandra your description proves I am right. It's the person who leads the singing in the Synagogue during holidays etc. And yes the rabbi si superior to the Hazzan (English spelling):
Read below:

Hazzan
A hazzan, chazzan or khazn (Hebrew for "cantor," "עברית: "חזן) is a Jewish musician trained in the vocal arts who helps lead the synagogue in songful prayer.
There are many rules relating to how a cantor should lead services, but the idea of a cantor as a paid professional does not exist in classical rabbinic sources. The Jewish prayer services have their own entry; the prayers in these services are collected in a prayerbook known as the siddur.

The person leading the congregation in public prayers is called the shaliach tzibbur (Hebrew for "emissary of the congregation"). Traditional Jewish law restricts the role to Jewish males over the age of 13; the non-Orthodox Jewish movements allow women over the age of 12 to have this role as well. Reform Judaism, Conservative Judaism, and Reconstructionist Judaism invest both men and women cantors as full clergy.

Hazzan

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks desertfox, you obviously know your stuff when it comes to Judaism. I used hazan as I thought it was the most accurate translation. "
