Spanish term

inadecuada ocupación laboral

Spanish to English Other Journalism Newspaper article on gold mining in Peru
Hi everyone! I'm translating a second article on illegal and informal gold mining in Peru. Does this refer to the fact that the actual work is unsuitable? Not quite sure how to put it in (UK) English. Thanks for your help!

inappropriate working conditions

I think this is the meaning. "Inadecuado", after all, strictly means "inappropriate" rather than inadequate.

The following use of the expression, in another document on the same subject (illegal mining in Peru) seems to me to imply the meaning I've indicated:

http://www.raejurisprudencia.com.pe/especial/descargas.php?p... (p. 9 col. 2)

Exploitation and slavery might be regarded as employment conditions rather than working conditions, but I think the latter covers both and is certainly more suitable for the first part, which is really about "health and safety", issues.

As I say, I think "working conditions" is the phrase; "employment conditions" tends to imply contractual conditions.

"Unsuitable" could be used instead of "inappropriate", or possibly "unfit", or even, stretching a point, "unacceptable".

I can see how "inadecuada ocupación" might lead you to "lack of employment", but this really doesn't fit the context, it seems to me: surely illegal mining, if anything, provides employment where it is lacking. The problem this is referring to is the quality of that employment, how and in what conditions people are required to work.

I repeat: "inadecuado" does not mean "inadequate" in the sense of "insufficient", only in the sense of "not up to standard". It can't mean inadequate in terms of quantity: to that extent it's a false friend.

To the extent that it is found used in the sense of inadequate (insufficient), it is a calque of English.

Thank you, Vidomar :)
agree Andy Watkinson : We should come down hard on these "illegal and informal" (sic) activities. They're obviously failing to provide sufficient jobs. Public disgrace, I say.......

Well, when you put it like that, I must admit... Thanks, Andy :)
neutral Rosa Paredes : I'd say substandard - not meeting existing standards; it goes beyond inappropriate.

Well, "inappropriate" is certainly something of a euphemism (as is "inadecuado", really). I'd settle for "unacceptable". But yes, "substandard" would also be OK. The real point is that it doesn't mean unemployment!
agree Neil Ashby : Excatly Charles, main point is that it isn't "unemployment" (oops! I fell in that trap), "inappropriate, unsuitable, unfit" all good. "substandard" has the implication that legal or safety norms are not being met - this we do not know....

Thanks very much, Neil ;)

unemployment / inadequate employment situation

"low employment" or "a lack of employment"

See the term "subempleo"- this seems to be the meaning of the expression
Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Forstag : At least in the US, we would say "unemployment or underemployment," but this seems to be the idea (after seeing Charles' post, I'm not so sure.)

underemployment

literally an inadequate level of employment, when the worker is offered fewer hours than the worker wants.

From a Peruvian document, like your source:

Peer comment(s):

neutral Rosa Paredes : I think it goes beyond this.
