Spanish term

chiste

Spanish to English Other Journalism aquaponics
“Nosotros diseñamos sistemas caseros de 2.80 cm3, un sistemita que no funciona solamente con tilapia, sino que puede servir para otros peces. ***El chiste*** es que vamos a aprovechar la armonía que tiene,” explicó XX, de la empresa ABC.

This is a text on aquaponics published in Mexico - so it may well be a Mexican use of the term 'chiste' - I am not sure what it means in this context anyway.

Many thanks in advance!

The trick is / clever thing is

Just a guess. Found the following definitions in the Harraps dictionary:

  (b) Andes, Méx, RP (broma) joke, prank; hacerle un chiste a alguien to play a joke o prank on sb; la pelea era CSur en o
Méx de chiste the fight was just for fun; no es chiste, perdió las dos piernas en un accidente I'm not kidding, he lost both his legs in an accident;
CSur ni en chiste, Méx ni de chiste: ¿vas a la fiesta? - ni en chiste are you going to the party? - no way! o you must be joking!;
Méx no vuelvas a hacer eso ni de chiste don't even think about doing that again
  (c) Andes, Méx, RP Irónico (cosa cara) adivina cuánto salió el chiste de su fiesta de Navidad guess how much it cost for their little Christmas party?; acaban de volver de China, ¿sabes cuánto les salió el chiste? they've just got back from China, how much do you think that little jaunt set them back?
  (d) Andes, Méx, RP (gracia) el chiste es aprobar sin matarse estudiando the really clever thing is passing without studying too hard
  (e) Méx (truco) knack; esto parece fácil, pero tiene su chiste this looks easy, but there's a knack to it

what's cool about this/the point

Literally it means “the joke”. Used this way, it commonly expresses a feeling akin to “the reason for doing this” or "we also get from doing this". It is extremely informal, hence “what's cool about this” in this context, I feel, is a better fit than “the point”.

point / idea

the point is that...

From the Oxford Spanish:

C (Colombia, México familiar) (gracia): el chiste es hacerlo en menos de un minuto the idea o point is to do it in less than a minute;
