Discussion

Mark Robertson Feb 7, 2011:
I have found all 216 pages of this work on the internet. It was apparently dictated to its human author from the world of spirits by a spirit called Emanuel. The authors seem to make great use of the word "concurso" and most of the time it has the meaning given by coolbrowne in his answer.
Mark Robertson Feb 7, 2011:
Unfortunately the context is of little help. Can it mean that having lost all recollection of XXXXXX he/she now seeks (buscando-se) to recall his/her brief encounter (concurso) with him/her.
Amy Duncan (X) (asker) Feb 7, 2011:
Dores quase insuportáveis me percorrem a cabeça. Estou inutilizada... Taciano escreveu pedindo a meu pai me conduzisse.

seeking my meager(-gre) assistance

In this case, "concurso" has the sense of "cooperação/auxílio", that is, help. Taking into account tone and style, "meager (UK meagre) assistance assistance" seems appropriate.

Portuguese term (edited): buscando-me o concurso tão pobre

who procured me for this ill-fated task

hmmm...some witterings of my own...this is tricky, to know properly what is meant by concurso pobre, we need to know the context of the whole thing. if what mark says is correct, then the person whose memory of x is fading is a medium, who provides a service for others...but...is it ill-fated, or futile, or is it simple and undemanding...or merely unimportant...i am probably just confusing things further...sorry!!!
