Hi everybody, I wonder if you can help me with a term that is troubling me. I am translating a whole load of payslips (folha de pagamento) from Brazilian PT to English and in some of the months, along wth the usual suspects (honorarios, seguros, Imposto de Renda etc) there is LIXO, followed by LIXO3. LIXO seems to be quite a large amount due to the employee (varying from 4 times to up to 12 times the monthly salary) while LIXO3 seems to be the tax paid on LIXO (more or less at the same rate as income tax). To confuse me further though, sometimes LIXO3 is the larger figure, and LIXO a percentage of that number.
LIXO and LIXO3 only ever appear together, and make an entrance semingly sporadically (in October, November and March for one employee in one year, but not at all in the next year; just in March of one year for another employee) which is futher hindering my efforts to understand the terms.
The traditional translations for "lixo" do not make sense here, and a few hours of internet searching has been fruitless too. I am at my wit's end and if anyone could help me, with either a translation or even an explanation in Portuguese, I would be very grateful indeed.

Disposal/waste fee
I never actually heard about a deduction of the "waste fee" in a payroll, but this fee does exist in São Paulo.
It is called "Taxa de Limpeza Urbana", we normally say "Taxa do Lixo"
I would translate as "disposal/waste" fee, because for me it could not be anything but that.

| Hi Luana, thanks for your suggestion. This tax you suggested was the only thing I could find on the net even remotely relating "lixo" to the subject, but I discounted it for a number of reasons. 1. The money seemed to be going TO the employee, not from his/her pay packet. 2. The sums were very large (one was 400,000 reais) and 3. If it was a standard waste disposal tax, wouldn't the employer pay it, not the employee? I am still baffled.... |
