Translating a user manual for a smart phone from JA to EN.
I wish I could upload a graphic here but it's not possible.
This word is used several times to point out the part of the phone
where there is a an "edge".
For example, it is the part where the battery fits into the body of the phone.
Dictionaries give lots of diff. options, none of which applies to this case. (depression, hole etc)
My translation as of now is, "Dent"

I think you need to apply different Japanese for different situations. If it is where a battery fits, it is usually called a battery compartment, for example.

Recess
"Recess" will fit quite nice and is widely applicable.
However, please note that each manufacturer has their own applicable terms and prferences.
Why not tell your customer - as I always do when I deliver - that your translation was that best word that fits and provide them with other candidates, e.g. indentation or indented area? Maybe they had neglected to provide you with their preferred word list, as is often the case.
This way you present the client with your recommendation and other candidates for their consideration. I'm sure either way that they'll appreciate the feedback and the fact that you're caring about the choice of words to make their document as clear and readily understandable as possible.

This word comes out in the body of the manual which was translated by another Japanese person. (I was only given the graphic part to translate) Below is how she/he translated it.
電池パックを取り外す Removing the Battery Pack
1 電池フタ下部のくぼみに指をかけ、電池フタを矢印の方向
へ持ち上げて取り外す
Push your finger into the indent at the bottom of the battery cover and then pull the cover up in the direction of the arrow.
2 電池パックのくぼみを利用して、電池パックを取り外す
Use the indent in the battery pack to remove it.
I think "slot" would be the best choice in this case, wouldn't it?
I can ask the translation to be changed for the text above and get rid
of "indent"
