イスラム過激派の犯行説

Japanese to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
スペイン総選挙は14日投開票されイラクからの撤兵を公約に掲げた野党の社会労働党が事前の予想を覆して勝利を収めた。選挙直前にマドリードで起きた列車同時爆破テロでイスラム過激派の犯行説が浮上し、世論がイラク戦争で対米協力を貫いた与党の国民党政権への批判に傾いた形だ。次期首相への就任が確実視される社労党サパテロ書記長は、公約通り撤兵を行う方針を表明した。

alleged involvement of Muslim Extremists

I propose a bit different phrase above as frequently posted in daily newspapers on political issues. See: http://jewishpreppers.blogspot.com/2010/06/american-muslim-e... for a typical phrase.

Thanks.
agree humbird : I think this is good. BTW you said "Muslim" whereas others said "Isramic" and I found this is quite interesting. Google hit is far greater in the first than the latter.

agree Mika Jarmusz : Yes, 説 here is used in the sense of allegation, and this rendition works well as the causal element for 国民党政権への批判に傾いた, as in "the alleged involvement ... strengthened the criticism for..."

The hypothesis of Islamic extremists involvement

Peer comment(s):

disagree humbird : -Ditto- See my comment to your other answer. 説 should be used for academic matter, just like "theory" and "hypothesis". Asker's context is only a layman's term such as news piece.

Isramic (or Muslim) Extremists involvement is suspected

Even 説 is used, it is not appropriate to use this word in this context (although I cannot say it is wrong. This kind of usage is quite frequent in daily news and such).
However, for defijintion, see what this dictionary says. http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch/0/0na/12601921001900/

Therefore, in this case it is better avoid direct translation or ignore 説, and translate with a slight twist.
So I translated イスラム過激派の犯行説が浮上し、for something like ** Possible Isramic Extremists involvement is surfaced (OR suspected in place of surfaced)**.
Peer comment(s):

agree Mika Jarmusz : Yes, suspicion works well for 説 as well, and it can be used as the causal element for the key point of the sentence, 国民党政権への批判に傾いた.

theories of Islamic Extremist association to these crimes (surfaced)

theories of Islamic Extremist association to these crimes (surfaced)

Reason for my answer:
---- Following the Madrid bombings, there were many theories out there as to what group could have instigated these crimes. (ETA the Basque separatist group? or Islamic Extremists?) Therefore, I will stick with the English word “theories” for 説.

Conflicting clues in bloody Madrid bombings / WHICH TERRORISTS? Theories point to Basque or Muslim extremists -- or both

The method of attack fed a third theory: that the coordinated strikes resulted from an alliance of Basque and Islamic networks.

Here is a website about the Madrid train bombings:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Madrid_train_bombings
The Madrid train bombings consisted of a series of coordinated bombings against the Cercanías (commuter train) system of Madrid, Spain on the morning of 11 March 2004 (three days before Spain's general elections), killing 191 people and wounding 1,800.[1] The official investigation by the Spanish Judiciary determined the attacks were directed by an al-Qaeda-inspired terrorist cell[2][3] although no direct al-Qaeda participation (only "inspiration"[4][5][6]) has been established.[7][8][9] Spanish miners who did not carry out the attacks but who sold the explosives to the terrorists were also arrested.[10][11][12]
