Japanese term
(多民族との)共生
Japanese to English
Other
Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Social science
Example:「日本社会は外国人労働者居住区や様々なサブカルチャーと共生できるのか。」
As we know, 共生 ("kyousei")usually means "symbiosis" or "consortism" (I didn't know there was such a word.) But since the 80's, many in Japan has seized on this concept as a key goal, and unifying theme, usually in relation to the world and nature. For the example above, I am searching for some term that connotes a relationship of equality, conviviality, inter-being, and mutual growth. "Co-existence" is only a small part of it. Perhaps there is no single English word that is equivalent, for Japanese have actually coined a new word off of an old one. Then, could we coin a term or a new usage?
I look forward to your wisdom and imagination.

Integrate and live in harmony with
Since the area of your interest is social science and promoting equality and mutual growth among different groups of people have been discussed a lot recently, I would add "integrate" to "live in harmony with."
Integrate does also have the meaning of promoting equality and at the same time, allowing people to live together, according to my dictionary. People can still live in harmony without equality and you might as well confirm that in some books that write about the caste system in some societies. (The reason why there was a time people were able to live in harmony under the caste system was because the intention of the leaders during those days was to provide social roles to each group of people, which did help the society to function properly for a limited time.)
If you are more fucussed on primitive lives during ancient times, "live in symbiosis with" would be a good translation. Nowadays, this expression appears more often in a different context, such as "live in symbiosis with the nature/ global ecosystem."
"live together with," "live with," "live in harmony together with," "live with," "live in harmony with" are not a mistake but they may be too vague to translate what you are looking for.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.
Comment: "I chose this answer because of your emphasis "on harmony with equality," and because your support for integration does not negate equality of groups. The amount and depth of effort you put in is fully appreciated. (It's three because the term "integration" came in forefront.) "

Well actually you couldn't really talk about fellowship with plant life, but this would be OK in a human relations context.

Used for personal relationships, professional relationships, and ecological or environmental relationships. Seems to fit the Japanese concept pretty well.

John Senior (X)
: Codependence often has negative connotations. Interdependence is better, but still not quite right. And -dependence words are always spelt with an 'e'. There is no "trend" toward 'a'; this is simply bad spelling.

Co-dependence (ance) is a real-world concept used by scientists, physicians and scholars. As a result, depending on context, it can have positive or negative connotations. Regarding "ance" endings, they are quite common, in books, on web-sites etc.

live/exist in harmony with
I think "exist" is better for a society, "live" for a person or people.
Will Japanese society be able to exist in harmony with communities of foreign workers and subcultures?
or how about
Can Japanese society learn to live in harmony with [the] communities of foreign workers and subcultures [that an influx of immigrants will bring]?
or, if this is in the present tense:
Does Japanese society have the ability to exist in harmony with...?

: This is pure fantasy. An adolescent 1960's style approach to a real-world situation. If this is social soience, than "living in harmony" cannot be used.

Codependence is a real-world concept, but it doesn't quite fit here. Interdependence, maybe. And by the way, citing random agony columns and self-help sites? Now that's an adolescent approach! Spelling dependence with an 'a' acceptable? Pure fantasy!

: I think John's suggestion makes sense. If more academic term is needed, this is not suitable, probably. But what Mr. Ono asking is not clear, so it could be said by "share with" "allow to have" "live with" "balance" etc.

: This is not a mistake at all and I don't think the English word has to be academic either. The only thing what I am not sure about this is whether it gets the meaning of what the asker is looking for.

日本における外国人労働者居住区やサブカルチャーは、次第に現実的・日常的なものになりつつあるように思います。
そこで、『生きる』、『生活する』という現実的・客観的な意味を思い切って捨て、内心で(主観的に)相手のことを評価するという意味を前面に出してみました。
意味を変えてしまっているような気もしますが。。

The word I know for symbiosis is a homophone, but has different, more description characters: 共棲 (lit. "living together")--in particular, 鯊(ハゼ) living, at 20 m or so, in the same hole with エビ, much closer quarters than this context.

Discussion
Before, I used "living in harmony" with equality, the right to ethnic development and/or integration. But trying to digest all of your thinking, I came to some old ideas as "intercommunity" and "intercommunalism." Groups as diverse as Brandeis University and the Black Panthers spoke of these ideas.
http://www.brandeis.edu/ethics/coexistence_initiative/
So, my head is brimming with a number of possibilities:
intercommunity equality
intercommunal coexistence
intercommunal equality
intercommunal harmony & fellowship
multi-ethnic Japanese society in which both assimilation and ethnic community development are guaranteed. (Japan is already a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society with the Okinawans, Ainu, Koreans, Chinese, Nikkeijin, and many others; and it has been from 12,000 years ago, with Jomon creole people.)
Please accept my heartfelt thanks.

Again, thanks!

PS Sharpness in discussion is not in conflict with fellowship and harmony, but there is a certain norm, I believe.
