One (image-photo) shows a frontal vision of the boxes in their horseshoe order dominated by the chandelier breaking the darkness together with still and intermittent lights above each row of boxes that underline the whole design like shining lines of a manuscript paper.
I believe the author is describing somewhat poetically the auditorium of la Scala with its six rows of boxes laid in a horseshoe fashion and the disposition of lights inside it. "Palchi" here means a row of boxes.
