From an article about Venice for a tourist magazine:

...“bigolanti”, venditori ambulanti che commerciavano “porta a porta” piccole quantità [of water].

These existed at the same time as the "acquaroli" of my previous post, in the 14th century for a few hundred years. I understand what they did, but I don't know the correct English term for it.

The local dialect word (venetian) Bigolante originates from ***bicollo*** a sort of ***shoulder yoke*** provided with hooks buckets hanging at the two extremities.

Literally "girls carrying water buckets with a shoulder yoke"
