Context: One of the steps in the development of this new vehicle is the design of the body, which is divided into various parts:

"Progettazione del body (studio e definizione dello stile esterno; studio e definizione dello stile interno; studio visibilita; studio ancorraggio cinture; studio **aree deterse**; ...; prove di simulazione numerica e caratterizzazione, anche dal punto vibro-acustico; etc.)"

Again, not much of a context. It seems to me that they mean something along the lines of a "visibility study", but they've already included that under "studio visibilita". So perhaps they mean a "study of the blind spots of the vehicle".

I'm not sure, but hopefully one of you out there has a translation for this. Thanks in advance.

I didn't know if the answer I'm going to post would automatically inform you of the translation that I've worked out since you're not labeled on the page as an "answerer". I presume that you will be, but I just wanted to make sure you'd get the translation.
So, I'm going to translate "studio aree deterse" as "comparison study of windshield areas cleaned by wipers". The mystery is solved!
I also want to thank you for your input -- it's always good to have a fresh eye on the problem at hand.

I was thinking of moedling and machine tools - I was just thinking about the fact that when you program a machine tool you program the path of the tool to remove the material and the product is what is left. That's all. It may not be applicable to your case at all, but it was something that struck me as possible especially given all the studies already listed. Cleaning sounds a bit far fetched to me - but then anything is possible! Post your soution, please :)

Not sure what you mean exactly I don't know. But all the elements that the "Design of the body" are divided in seem pretty major: study of the style of the body, study of the seat belt anchorage, visibility study, etc. Would you really have a study that focuses on the quantity of material removed during construction? I'm not sure. Then again, maybe you're right -- I guess I'm just not sure I understand exactly what you mean by "removed material/negative space".
